Sounds like anecdotal tale of something that may have happened once or twice but certainly not a regular occurrence. Wrens are cavity-nesters and will attempt to utilize any cavity they find. A soup can nesting attempt may have just been an inexperience young bird trying to use the first available cavity it found.

I don't know what bird book you are reading, but I would never use a soup can (or any other type of can) for a birdhouse. The birds can cut themselves on the metal.

If you want a good birdhouse, check here: http://www.holoweb.com/cannon/buildingbh.htm

Scroll down to the birdhouse basics for general information, then go back up and click on the link for wrens, chickadees and nuthatches.
