is it my place to try to work on their walking manners or just let them to what they want on the walk?

I helped at a Humane Society, and they encouraged us to help, but you should learn their methods of teaching. Because people have different views on training methods.

I've been volunteering at shelters for a long time. What I do is if I get a dog who is really pulling on the leash hard or just going crazy rather than walking, I will work on getting them to calm down and walk with me. Really though the most important thing is to get the dogs exercise and let them get out of their pens for a while, so don't push the issue too much.

Never, ever let a dog do what it wants to on a walk. That indicates to a dog that it is in control, and you must be the one in control. That doesn't mean that you need to be a stickler for perfect leashing behavior, but you do have to control jumping, surging, and pulling. With a shelter dog that is going to be placed for adoption, it is all the more important that every human who comes in contact with it be consistent in guiding the dog. How well it relates to and accepts human contact may very well determine if it finds a home, or not. Thank you for volunteering; more like you are needed.

If you know how to work on their manners, it'd be great to add that to the walk. Thank you for volunteering! The dogs will be so happy to get some exercise!

i sure love animals and they are like little children and are always trying to please you in what they do. you should always try and teach them how to walk and be a better dog, this will have them more obedient then they were and it's always nice to be around animals that listen to their master, and more people will find this as a favor to a new home for their new member of the family. good luck and always enjoy what you do in life.

most of the dogs were very anxious to see my family and behaved nicely. often the dogs understood basic commands, like no, sit, heel, etc.

gentle corrections and love is needed also if you can, offer to foster a dog for the weekend or overnight. you'll get a "mitzvah".

I am a little confused on this question, but, I know that, if you have any questions about walking the dogs, it's best to ask the other workers at the shelter, that way, you know that you are getting the right answers, and, you know how to do it right! I hope that this answers your question! Thanks, and, have fun,

I think the dogs would be grateful just to have someone take an interest in them. Work with them if you can, but don't force it on them.

Thanks for volunteering:)
