my husband had a radical neck dissection in august of 06 with removal of floor of the mouth tongue jawbone lympnodes in both sides of the neck.jaw bone replaced with bone from hip.cancer returned in june of 07 now the jaw bone is broke into and now the surgens in vanderbilt in nashville refuse to go in and put it together to stop most of his pain tey told me they didnt wont to see him no more now my question is can i take him to another surgen he is now on chemo which seems to be working pretty good but the broken bone is the cause of all of his pain since the vanderbilt surgens refuse to see him because they made there mistakes and should have used a bar to replace the bone what can i do now need answers soon

his surgens no longer take his insurance and there is no pain clinic in the place where we live that takes cancer patients we have been to them all and with his tenncare you are not allowed to go out of your county been off of radiation since january and he was over dosed on it from what the doctors are telling me

Radiation makes bones porous and very fragile, which is why the ENTs at Vanderbilt cannot operate again. Also, the surgical site wouldn't heal because of the radiation, either. They may not have had the tissue to attach a "bar" to, and if you think his repair hurts now, a bar would have been even more so.
At this point, your husband should have better management of his pain. Ask his doc (oncologist) for a referral to a pain clinic. He shouldn't have to suffer any more than he is. A radical surgery like his DOES cause chronic pain, as you know, and it can be managed.

wait until you finish the chemotherapy course then the situation should evaluated again , Strong analgesic can treat the pain which may subside gradually upon the effect of chemo.

Do you have a phone book with your area Hospice Nurses number? They provide assistance and advice not only at the end of life stage but also anything they can do before to make someone's life more comfortable. Call them. Their services are usually free.

He should be getting adequate pain medication while going through this. If he isn't, speak with the doctor and if the doctor will not give him adequate pain medication, report him.
