If you were actually stopped by the police and TOLD you were committing an offence, they have 28 days to inform you by post.

If you went through a speed trap or red light camera (i.e. no face-to-face contact with the police), they have 14 days to send you a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

Once you have received the written notice, the police have up to six months to bring the case to court.

Depends what the offence is. A warning notice of intended prosecution must be issued within 14 days of the offence if not given at the time you were reported. A summons must be issued within 6 months of the date of the offence.

So, usually you would hear within the 14 days.
