I love getting the program and I keep all of them! I made the programs for our wedding. I like seeing all the people in the bridal party, as well as extras like greeters and readers. Its also a good place for the bride and groom to write a thank you to their guests, and write their new address. If you have extra space, you can add a poem or verse. It doesnt take much effort to make really nice programs. Heres a pic of ours:

We had programs at our wedding in order to acknowledge our friends and family who were a part of the ceremony and to explain the significance of various parts of the ceremony to people who were not of the same faith. Also, for the people closest to us, they made a nice keepsake.
To me, programs are optional. If your wedding is complicated, they provide a great method for helping all your guests understand what is going on. If your wedding is small and simple, they may not be necessary, but no one should think you are silly for having them either.

No, we had a simple, informal wedding, and didn't see the need. I considered having them printed on fans though, I thought it was a nice idea for an outdoor wedding in the summer. Programs are a personal choice, and if it is a short ceremony, a waste of money. No one will miss them if you don't have them.

I am getting married in less than 11 months and we are using programs. Because we are incorporating a mini Lutheran service into the ceremony scriptures and hymns will be put in there. Along with that the names of everyone in the bridal party will be in there along with our host families. We are also having flowers in memory of my step mom and other close family members who have passed away and cannot share our day with us. It's a good informational purpose thing, they are great for keepsakes, and for our case since my husband to be is from a different state than I am, this helps people know who is who.
Good luck and Congrats!

Our wedding was so informal and so small it would not have been appropriate to have them. All of our guests travelled to the registry office together in hired cars (we hired people carriers) and we went in for the service, which at the registry office is only 15 minutes long anyway, then we went back to the house for pictures to be taken. I think if the event is formal then it is a really good touch.

I like them for weddings with many attendants and/or long weddings with lots of things going on (readings, songs, etc.) It helps the guests know who all these people are and approximately when they get to chow down. :-) But for short, uncomplicated weddings that don't have a large wedding party, I don't recommend them. Plus, most will get thrown away (or hopefully recycled.)

They are good in some cases. They do become a keepsake and are especially useful for those friends and distant family to learn who is in the wedding party. They are also good for giving guest a print version of the readings/vows (they're really nice when you are having unique vows). By personalizing it, they can be very lovely.

At first my fiance and I weren't, but after seeing some examples online we decided to do so.
I figure we will make up programs for those to read after they arrive so they have something to read while waiting for the ceremony to start.
Some things in our program include: Wedding party, Schedule of events, about him, about me, how we met, the proposal, menu for the reception, acknowledgments, and directions to the reception site.

Yes, we did. People like to save them and it also give people something to look at before the wedding starts. Some people get there pretty early and passing 20 minutes or more isn't easy.

Yes. I think they're great because they list the members of the wedding party, the order of the service, and for ours, we printed out the special reading we had done at the ceremony.
