make sure you do a lot of research about alternative sources of proteins and don't just try to rely upon cheese and soy products for your protein. a lot of the soy stuff is gross tasting and you'll easily get discouraged.
i only lasted two weeks as a vegetarian because i didn't do my research.
you can eat eggs, milk, and cheese if you aren't a vegan. vegans don't eat any animal products at all.

If you want become vegetarian, I suggest you do a lot of research and and determine if it's right for you. Not because you don't really want to do it but so that you do it the right way and you don't make yourself ill, like I did. I first became vegetarian at 16 and only ate vegetables and starches, forgetting to replace the proteins that are so important! In any case, you can not eat fish, the rule being that if it was once a living thing that crawled, swam, walked, flew or slithered, you can't eat it. You may eat eggs and drink milk, you're thinking of vegan or lacto-vegetarian. There are a ton of sites out there to help you and many, many books. Here's one to start you off. http://www.wikihow.com/Become-a-Vegetarian
And for those people out there that say you will miss meat...you won't. There are so many substitutes out there that taste so close to the real thing that you will barely notice a difference.

I work with a bunch of physicians from India. My favorite one told me vegetarian foods are good only if they are cooked right. Its more than just heating up a can of beans and munching down. Its about adding the right spices at the right time during the cooking and knowing how to cook it.
He eats a lot of beans and ironically he has a few kids and they are not vegetarian. He says they love hot dogs and fast food burgers.
I have tried the vegetarian diet and its just not for me. I think vegetarians do better when they are born into the eating habit of no meat.
Maybe you could start by cutting red meats out of your diet and eating only fish and chicken. Then if that works for you....you can eventually go to no meat at all.
Good luck.

you just cant be a vegetarian like that after years of being used to eating meat. you're going to have to reduce meat little by little or trying to withdraw meat at once will fail because you will keep having cravings which will eventually win in the end. But you can eat anything in the world except for animals. And to the smart one that answered waaayy above(wicked witch of the west) fishes ARE animals. If they're not then what are they? anyways some vegetarians eat fish and some don't, it all depends on the person

A vegan can't have milk, but a vegetarian can: you can drink milk, eat cheese and yogurt, just avoid meat.
A vegetarian diet is much more healthy then a vegan diet, because by never eating animal proteins you risk great physical imbalances. You can be vegan for a while (15/30 days if you are healthy), but not always. On the other hand being vegetarian, if well planned, can be the diet of your life.

Actually I'm a vegertarian and you can eat fish (although I don't) as it is not classed as meat and they can also eat diary products. If diary is excluded from the diet to you would be thinking of becomming a vegan. Personally going vegitarian wasn't a big difference to my diet as i have never eaten much meat. I just make sure never to stop eating carbs! As there an important part of my diet as protein can be quite hard to find as it is in alot of meat and also include lots of vegtables for iron and fibre and pulses!, as they are very important to eat when you are not eating meat.
If you are thinking of becomming a vegan i would thoroughly research it and prepare before hand as it will be quite a major change in diet, but of course perfectly healthy if done with thought, and also perfectly do-able!
Good luck!

it depends upon whether what kind of vegetarian your going to be. i have family members who are vegetarians, but still drink milk and eat eggs to help fulfill some of their protein and dairy needs. Most meats are fine for you to eat IF u proportion them correctly... especially your lean meats like fish and chicken breast.

You did not mention why you were thinking to become vegetarian. For health reasons or any other? I don't know the history when and why a person became a vegetarian. But I guess its due to some religious belief. For you it may be difficult to continue as a vegetarian if it really is due to religious belief.
