This shouldn't be homework - people should make up their own minds about religion - unless it is an exercise whereby she is supposed to be playing the *role* of an atheist.
I do wonder if you replaced the word "Bible" with "Koran" though if there would be an outcry whatever the case.
Silly, silly teacher - aren't there enough problems in the world (and in the schools)?

I think that whoever wrote this statement is ignorant about the content of the Bible.

One reason I think this is because the Bible contains a variety of genres--not "just a load of stories."

Another rezson I think this is because it seems clear to me, especially in some of Paul's letters, that Paul really believed what he was writing. He wasn't trying to fool anybody.

Other people do not agree with me. They would say that the Bible is just a load of stories made up by clever men to fool.

They would argue that the Bible has been used for years to control and manipulate people.

They would also say that science has disproven many of the stories in the Bible.

I think they are wrong because their conclusion does not follow from their reasons. Even if the Bible has been used to control and manipulate people, it doesn't follow that all of the authors of the Bible wrote it for that purpose. And even if many of the stories in the Bible are untrue, it doesn't follow that the authors KNEW they were untrue and were just trying to fool people.

Questions like that flourish among the ignorant as this very forum amply testifies.

They actually encourage people not to think but to be influenced by popular ignorance, bigotry and fallacious reasoning.

As such they are closer to propaganda than reasoning or education.

Further they are much more likely to stimulate emotions than thought, something not at all desirable among children whose character and self control is yet undeveloped.

Frankly it is doubtful that a proper answer can be given to such a question (except perhaps to a very few to whom revelation has been given) without proper examination and research, which is simply not available nor practical for children to undertake. That goes for anybody. How can you answer from ignorance?

You will also notice that the question controls the way the answer can be given. The questioner wishes to control the answerer. You can draw the obvious conclusions from that.

If this is a genuine question and occurrence it is a terrible indictment of how far we have fallen into foolishness in our schools and the profound lack of understanding in the teaching profession and among those who ought to know better.

It is perhaps not so much a case of the blind leading the blind as one of the blind leading the sighted?

I cannot believe a school would do this! How awful!

Completed Sentences:

I think that....no, I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior!

One reason that I think this is because...not because I think this, but because I know this is that he is with me each day in my heart and I can feel his presence with me.

Another reason I think this is because...I know he's guided me through difficult situations and he brings me joy and peace like nothing else can ever do.

Other People do not agree with me. They would say that the Bible is...written by man, but they are wrong. The Bible was given to man from Our Heavenly Father.

They would argue that....there is no God, but I know there is because he's with me and has always been with me. I am living proof of his existence.

They would also say that...God is a fantasy. He's not. He is real!

I think they are wrong because...I don't think they are wrong, I know they are wrong. Read your Bible. Everything that is in there was written hundreds of years ago and all these things have come to pass. We are living the Bible today. I know that when I read the passage, Ask and you shall receive, Seek and you shall find, Knock and He will answer...it's all true. I've ask and received, seeked and found his love and joy...knocked and he answered me. God is awesome. He gives me joy like no other ever has.

I strongly disagree with the classroom teacher giving this as homework. He/She has no right to grade these papers as they are making the children open themselves to ridicule and controversy. This is something more suitable for a Bible study class. If my son/daughter brought this home as homework I would definitely be asking some questions before it ever got filled out. If I even allowed it to get filled out.

Where does she go to school?

I disagree with the statement and think that the assignment is going to cause a lot of trouble. Is her teacher an atheist trying to impose her views on others?

What grade is she in? Is this a Christian school, a public school, a charter school, or what?

I'm not a Christian, but I'm surprised and disgusted they set such an insulting piece of homework at your daughter's school.

If RS teachers are coming up with such statements, how can we possibly expect peace and harmony from an average human?

I don't believe the bible is made up. I DO believe it is badly interpreted, and the Roman Catholic Church spun it to control the masses. But really, that is just me.

I think it is a fantastic assignment. It will provide an opportunity to express her feeling about the bible in a logical (as logical as one can be about religion) way.

Questions posed to make you think and examine how you really feel and cause you to think will always be viewed as evil by those who say that you must follow blindly without question. It is through questions that we are led to understanding. The Statement posed is not meant as a fact but rather a discussion point. Pray in the name of Jesus all you like, but it is God that desides your fate. No one is the keeper of God for there is none higher, nor is anyone God but God.
