If you buy and sell US stocks which include mutual funds you are subject to US income tax if you have a gain (make a profit).

If you are a non-resident alien and have a US based Ameritrade account you are subject to a 30% tax on any gains, levied at the source. The tax will be withheld by Ameritrade (assuming you have properly advised them of your status) and any remainder will be paid to you.

If the account is based in Portugal or elsewhere in the EU you will only pay your regular national taxes, whatever those may be.
