The short answer - participate in it.

What do I do...ok backslapping time :-)

For a start I grow and share a lot of my own fruit and vegetables, catch and use all my own water in tanks and recycle waste to grow fruit trees. The produce from those is shared locally as fruit, and in a range of wines and beers.

I have about 250 acres of land which I am replanting with native trees which help to reduce pollution, fix carbon, encourage wildlife to thrive, pull up water from the water table, create microclimates and look nice.

I recycle not food waste into compost, glass and plastic through the municipal council, and produce very little glass and plastic waste.

I keep my driving to a minimum, sharing journeys where possible and averaging about 6000km a year, not bad considering I live 25km from the nearest shop and 50km from the nearest town.

I help with conservation and Bush regeneration.

I participate actively in newsgroups sharing and acquiring knowledge on sustainable living, as well as particular farming interests.

I help out a bit with science and maths education for friends and rellies.

I pioneer a more sustainable way of life for the future I think we are going to be facing by living a more (though not perfect) sustainable life than most.

I think a person in a community cn do so many different things to make a difference. they can do simple things like helping the elderly at the grocery store to helping a sick nieghbor with yard work to giving people rides to the hospital when they need it. There are so many small things that everyone could do that could change someone's life, day or even their outlook on life. The small things can really add up to become more meaningful than the big things.
Some things that can be done by anyone are:
going to a local soup kitchen to help out
helping at the red cross
going to a senior citizen home and keeping some people company
picking up some trash in local parks

not everything has to be things other people will nescesarially notice. picking up trash in your town could really help it become nicer. when there is trash on the ground, people feel less bad that if they put their trash there too.

Give people a smile at least now and then. Hold a door for someone with their hands full sometimes. Pitch in where you see a hand is needed if you are so inclined. I recycle everything I can, compost what I can, and try in a variety of ways to limit the amount of pollution and waste I generate. I also responded to an ad asking for help with food donations at the food pantry. I go around once a week and pick up donations and drop them off. I also chose to help illiterate adults learn to read and write so they can improve their own lives. I found out about both opportunities in a community bulletin. What you might choose to do will depend on your own interests, abilities, and schedule constraints. I don't look for a pat on the back as I feel all these things also make a better community and world for me and my loved ones to reside in. I feel fortunate to have the extra time to give to community improvement and it makes me feel great to think I helped someone.

I teach children in the 3rd grade. I am like a mother to many of them. I help them learn to love themselves and others.
I've been doing this for 26 years.

Former students STILL come to see me and tell me how much I mean to them. I am teaching children of former students. Their parents still remember some of the lessons I taught, and I am not referring to "just academics"

Don't try to make a difference, you'll just get enemies. Be yourself, do what you do, don't make a difference in a bad way and you'll gain respect and be trustable
