The rice is is compacted in a small bag, and the babies weight is spread out over its body.

A few reasons:-
The pressure you sense on your body is the weight divided by the area. If you're holding the bag by a handle, the pressure on your fingers is much greater that the pressure of a baby spread out across your arms. (Put the baby in a bag and hold it by the handles - it will feel a lot heavier).
It's less easy to love a bag of rice

Its called dead weight vs live weight. I sure there is some scientific reason for it. It works with all living things.

i agree it is the live weight vs the dead weight..plus the charisma that the babies have that makes them weigh less or make us want to carry them..

i agree with cooldaddy24, it is same as carrying a plush top of 1kg wt or carrying a bag of potatoes.
