Be very, very kind to yourself by sleeping on a basic schedule, eating on a basic schedule, exercising, and finding out what makes you tick.

Being productive and accomplishing things helps.
Eating regularly so you aren't having blood sugar crashes and malnutrition helps.
Tai-Chi or yoga to dump stress, relax the body and put yourself back in control helps. Both are huge in controlling stress, depression and anxiety.

Learn to say no. People who say no are 35% happier. Stick up for yourself and do not take on more than you need to.

Cut yourself some slack. Talk to yourself like you would a best friend or little sister. Take your own advice.

A good counselor to plan with and vent to helps.
Good friends help.
Treating yourself with kindness, dignity and respect and making sure others do helps.
Working on your dream(s) helps. Maybe you want to get to school, or take up a dream hobby or climb a mountain. Whatever makes you feel alive is where you start heading.
Practice. Cut yourself some slack for being a human.

Allow bad days and good days, but always treat yourself well.
Stop the negative talk. Be your own best friend. No one anywhere can ever make you happy. This is your life, so make it what you wish it was.

View mistakes as things learned and drop them. Move up and on. Praise your achievements, even if it is only that you got up today and took a shower.
Move it. Get up, get out, and get going--especially when you don't want to.
Start smiling. Start living. You don't have time for to let depression run your life. We all have the gift of right now and have the choice what to do with it, but tomorrow may never come. Don't waste time in the darkness. Taste the rain, listen to the wind, start working on where you want to go. Allow happiness.

Truly learn to love yourself. What is so unlovable about you? What is lovable? Listen to how you talk to yourself and start doing a good job at it. Stop apologizing, defending, denying, avoiding, and procrastinating. Get on with being happy. It is a real choice and you can make it. Name ten things that make you happy that involve no one except yourself. Ten things you love about you. Can't do it? Start working on it.

Avoid drugs, alcohol, abuse, creeps, and people that keep you down. You deserve good things. Give them to yourself and accept no less.

One foot in front of the other. Today might be just about getting up. Tomorrow might be that you put on make-up and actually left the building or had a lunch date. Next month maybe you volunteer at a homeless shelter, pet sanctuary, or do something kind for someone. Next year maybe you enroll in a course you love or take up photography. I don't know you, but you get the idea. Don't beat yourself up over set-backs. We all have them.

Exercise is the number one way to beat depression. Find something you love and go do it, whether it is dance, aerobics, hiking, yoga, Tai-Chi, Karate, etc .You need it. Get it. It will change you and your body.

Good luck and good living. Hope this at least gives you ideas. Medication comes if other things don't work or if you are suicidal. Cognitive/Behavioral therapy has been proven to work for life. Meds stop working as soon as you stop taking them if they work at all. The basics work: Diet, exercise, therapy, and sleep, along with accomplishing some goals and feeling like you are meeting your potential and are contributing something worthwhile. Studies will support what I am saying.

People who have clinical depression don't just "snap out of it." It's going to be a real challenge for you and your kids. You'll learn how to handle it along the way and also learn to enjoy the times when he's feeling pretty good. I guess the best advice I can give you is that there is nothing you can do to change it - you can't make it better or make it go away. Therapy is a great idea and really can help. I was skeptical, but talk therapy really seems to make a difference. Lastly, don't degrade yourself if you just can't do this. People who haven't been through it have no idea what it takes to live with a person who suffers with depression. Try the therapy, give it a year and see where you're at then. When he's going through an especially bad time, be supportive but give him a lot of space. The best thing you can do is listen when he wants to talk about it and leave him alone when it doesn't. I wish you all the luck in the world. Don't let anyone who hasn't been through this sway the choices you make.

Any one of these is a good start

first identify the cause of your depression. ask yourself what it is that your agonising over. then reason and ask whether that matter is really worth getting depressed over and whether you really should be wasting time just languishing in doubt over that issue. more often than not, your happiness is more important than worrying abt that issue, so i say get over it and live life.
