My main advantage is stress relief...If you had a bad week at work or something, spend a little time at the range with a few hundred rounds of your favorite caliber and firearm and bring a few friends for the conversation; there is nothing better. A lot of people spend hundreds of dollars going to spas....I pend 50 bucks and go the range.
Range time per hour- $9
Targets-$5
Ammo-15.96 at walmart
Shooting paper targets and BSing about bs-Priceless
I enjoy meeting people at the range and shooting new firearms and discussing whatever comes up.
Also the home defense is a plus...I cannot Conceal Carry in the state of IL near the Great State of Chicago... I feel better knowing that it is close by me.

Advantages of owning a handgun? They are legion.
Primarily: The ability to defend/protect yourself and your loved ones from two or even four-legged predators.
As has already been stated: Peace of mind; self reliance in the event of crisis situations, etc.
Best.

Same as the advantages of owning any other tool - you already have it when you need it. Right in the middle of a self-defense situation is NOT the time to start shopping for a weapon.

1) Piece of mind knowing you and you family are better protected.

Advantages? You can target shoot, "plink" (just informally shooting at targets), or use a handgun to defend yourself (if it's an appropriate caliber), or hunt. They are easier to transport than a rifle or shorgun and range space does not have to be large and long.

You'll make any knife fight into a gun fight simply by attending. Because you're the only one with the right gear, you win by default.
But no, seriously now.
Owning a handgun, as opposed to a shotgun or rifle, will allow you to apply for a carry permit and keep it close by at all times. While the likelyhood that you'll ever need a gun while you're out and about are unlikely, it's far better to have it and never use it than it would be to not have it when you need to use it. If anything ever happens to put you in a threatening situation, you'll be able to defend yourself and your family.
In a recent news story, a group of women were out shopping. Upon walking to their cars, they were held up by several assailants with knives. One of them, defiant to give up her money or purchases, kept walking. "What are you going to do, stab me or something?" None of these women carried a firearm on them, and they were in a situation that would have been turned completely around had they been carrying. Instead, one of them decided to rely on her quick wit and sharp tongue. As it turns out, that didn't work, and the three of them were stabbed to death. The length of knives the criminals used were actually illegal to carry concealed, but that certainly didn't stop them.
Long story, but you get the picture, right?
Plus, you'll get to 'practice' shooting with it and not have to pay rental on a worn out glock that hasn't been cleaned in ages. I say 'practice' because they're fun to shoot at targets, and that would be even another benefit.

Having my 10mm Glock saved me from getting robbed and possible killed when my truck broke down and I was waiting for a tow truck.

Owning your own makes it rather easy to become a good shot. Owning one also makes getting a gun if and when you NEED a gun easy.
