Instead of worrying about how a dog will look next to you, I suggest you decide on a breed by doing a lot of research on temperament, exercise requirements, health issues, etc. and then make a educated choice to get a breed that will compliment your situation. Looks are certainly NOT everything. Making the decision to own a dog is a HUGE one that can last 10-16 years! Dogs are not accessories, therefore you should not base your decision on how they will "look".
My best advice would be to attend local dog shows, check out the different breeds, ask the breeders/owners tons of questions... narrow dog a few breeds you are interested in and then really start your research! You will want to meet as many dogs of that particular breed, as many owners, and spend time getting to know the overall breed.
I do wish you luck and hope you think twice about choosing a breed because of how it will make you look. Owning a dog is a privilege, not a right.

it's silly to worry about what you look like with the dog.
i do understand and feel that way too sometimes when i walk my mini dachshund (sausage dog) and people look at us, I've always had BIG dogs. mind you he thinks his a big dog. and is just as much fun.
but the best way is to find a dog you love and who's breed and personality suits you. try this web site it might narrow down the field for you.
take the test on this one:-
http://www.petnet.com.au/selectadog.asp
and this one to do more research:-
http://www.pedigree.com.au/breeds/
also think about get one from your local rescue / pound. those dogs are full of love to give and have great little personalities.
plus some times you can get a great deal not just on the breed but with my little fellow, not only did he come vet checked, wormed, vaccinated, desexed and micro chipped he was also house broken, knew all his basic commands and was out of that destructive stage of chewing and digging.
good luck and remember pet ownership is a big responsibility not just a fashion statement

I love and have all sizes in my pack. Little ones are more fragile but seem to me to be more aggressive because they get pushed around and stepped on by the other dogs a lot. Bigger breeds seem to take to training better and I think are more loving (show there affection easier). Don't worry about what people think about you so much. You know who you are (I hope) and that should be all that matters. To hell with people judging others by appearance.I hope you find this helpful Sloan R.
P.S. Be a trendsetter! Create your own style girly girl.

I personally think big dogs are awesome! But looks don't matter, temperment really is all that counts. It wouldn't make you look tomboyish. In fact, a really great breeds that are medium sized would be:
Samoyed (The picture is of my dog. Copy and paste it.)

Samoyeds are so lovable and sweet! These dogs are
girly-girl but also pretty big. (21-24 in.)

Dogs that are well-exercised, well cared for and well trained are the ones that make their owners look good.
They live 10-18 years, and they are full time commitments, like having a baby.
They're not your typical accessory.

if you are concerned with what looks best "with you", then you are too concerned with your looks to have a dog.
Buy more make up, and let the dogs go to homes where the people are concerned about who the dog is, rather than their own vanity.

Please do not get a dog. They are not accessories they are living being who need a lot of care and attention. When you get a dog you've got to be ready to invest 12-13 years of your life into it.
