My 14 month old daughter usually wakes up every morning with a stuffed up nose. September has been particularly bad as she can't breathe out of her nose. Is this allergies? If so, why is seemingly unaffected during the day? Any ideas as to how I can help her? She has been waking really early these days and can not seem to get back to sleep because of it.

It sounds like a dust mite allergy.

First thing you do is call a pediatric allergist and get an appointment ASAP. A mild allergy to dust mites can cause asthma attacks. People have died from asthma attacks.

Second thing to do is got out and buy encasing for her mattress and pillow. The cheapest ones are vinyl, and the more expensive ones are usually made of polyethylenes or polypropylene, both are equally effective. Make sure is says it's for allergies on the cover. If you get a polypropylene or polyethylene cover, it needs to washed periodically, vinyl needs only to be wiped down. Make sure whatever you get, it has a zipper enclosure.

Third thing is always wash her sheets, pillowcases and blankets on hot at least every other week.

The most important thing you can do is reduce your child's exposure to the allergen.Dust mites live in fabrics and carpets and are common in every room of the house. But most children are exposed to the most dust mites in the bedroom, where mattresses and pillows are veritable dust-mite condominiums.Wash the bedding, avoid putting stuff animals on the bed with them, dust and vacuum once a week it possible. Pet dander i know some people dont want to give their pet away so try to wash your pet frequently. You can find pet shampoo that helps with pet dander. The other is mold try to use a dehumidifier and air conditioner when the weather is warm and moist, especially in a wet basement or other areas of your home where mold growth is a problem. If your bathroom is a mold factory, clean it regularly with mold-inhibiting disinfectants, such as a little bleach and water or a natural solution like tea tree oil and water. There are over the counter allgery medicines that you can give but i would talk to your doctor but giving them. I hope this helps.

She could have asthma, also.Ragweed is really bad this year.I have allergies and asthma. My son had bad allergy and breathing problems when he was young. At age 5,i doscovered he had multiple food allergys.I took him off these foods and he doesn`t have a problem with asthma or allergys.I notice when i stay off these foods myself,my asthma and allergy problems are much better. It`s hard for me to stay off the foods, but i make my son do,because he was so sickly as a baby, and up until i found out he had food allergys. He would wake up at night crying, because he couldn`t breath, before i took him off allergenic foods. There are many herbal suppliments that help with allergys and asthma. They work better if you stay off processed foods and allergenic foods.Nettle,Vit.C quercetin, help with allergys,Mullein, fenugreek, wild Cherry, help with asthma.Otherwise I guess you have to go with meds that have side effects.

Poor baby!

My guess is that she's allergic to something in her pillow or bedding. Try using an allergen-free detergent, and if the material will stand it wash in hot water. Also, try getting hypo-allergenic covers for her pillows.

Good luck!
