Technically, the chips are the property of the casino, so you're not supposed to. But I've never heard of anyone getting crap for leaving with a big pile of chips.

Yes since the chips cost far less to manufacture than their actual face value some casinos acually encourage you to 'collect' chips as a hobby. whenever I am in Vegas I always ask at the cashier for a nice new chip that I can add to my collection.

Actually - no.
They will turn a 'blind eye' to a $1 or $5 chips or two...
but, they have serious fraud problems with fake chips, so they will ask to you change if they believe you have any high-priced chips no your person BEFORE you attempt to leave.
they know you have them, because the 'eye in the sky' can see everything that goes on.

Yes, but you should not keep them long term because occasionally casinos will discontinue the use of some chips and have a redemption period.
