What is it you want? Is it that you think the speed limits are too low or that there shouldn't be any at all? It seems that no matter what the limit there is always someone breaking it. I am so sick of being tailgated because I stick to the speed limit and I want to know why some people think they are such great drivers they can do this. I have noticed that these drivers are great on the straight but can't keep up on corners/bends. If they learned to drive properly they wouldn't need to break the limits. They overtake at the most dangerous times, if they want to commit suicide take an overdose or something else that won't take others with them.
So .. what do you want?

Not really roadrage. Driving home yesterday a car shot past me in a small village on a twisty road where the limit is 40. There are 3 blind bends, there was a child crossing who only just got out of the way. If he had killed the child could he live with himself? Was it worth the extra 30 seconds or so he gained? This morning trying to cross the road outside my house, again small village, 40 limit, car comes hurtling around the bend just missing me and my dog. Ok maybe rage but not roadrage.

tallpaul: I know if they hit me from behind they're in the wrong but I already have spinal damage from being hit by a drunk driver 20 years ago so another knock could kill me!

some interesting comments, if you really want to meet god go do it some way that won't take anyone else with you! No it isn't my job to enforce speed limits, and I wouldn't want to and haven't tried to. What gives someone else the right to try to force me to travel outside the limit?
Hey GeorgeG, I'm me, who are you?

tallpaul. I don't expect them to be mindreaders, I expect them to respect other people and know their own limitations! Why should I speed up by 5 miles an hour and break the law just because someone else wants to? I travel on the limit, I don't cause an obstruction unless you are driving too fast in which case, pass me when it is safe to do so, that's your choice!
I don't know where you live but around here the 'safety' cameras are placed near accident blackspots and our speed limits aren't changed randomly. In fact all the cameras I can think of are on straight stretches of road with plenty warning before you get to them so if you haven't seen them what were you doing?

Hardly anyone has answered the original question. What do you want the limit to be? Do you want all limits lifted? Additionaly: If they were what speed would you drive at?

Isn't it strange that the ppl who speed and tailgate are often the ones who wander across the road because, we all know, they own it!
If you get rid of the speed limit it would solve a lot of problems ie
1. There'd be no old ppl soon because they'd all get splatted crossing the road.
2. There'd be no kids for the same reason.
3. There'd eventualy be no young drivers as they wouldn't reach 17 to learn to drive.
4. There'd be no 'slow' drivers so everyone would get there quicker.
In fact there'd be no pedestrians, no-one would dare go out. One problem ..... how would you get to your cars?
I don't suffer from road rage, if you want to kill yourself go ahead. I do try to pull over and let them pass but that's not always possible. I'm not a doddery old fool and can probably drive faster than you but choose not to. I have 4 Rally drivers in my family and my daughter is a co-driver. One of the drivers is a World Rally Champion and a very safe driver on the roads.

at last someone with some sense on the road, im a female bus driver, im convinced one day im going to see someone die (which l really dont want to) trying to overtake me, drivers overtake me when they clearly shouldnt as others are coming in the opposite direction, or ill be approaching another bus on the opposite side of the road and some idiot overtakes, then they are panicking and weaving all over the place and l then have to risk injuring my passengers to break for them, so im with you 100% x.

Some of those people that speed and tailgate others really must think that they will get to where they are going faster or by tailgating will get that other person to go faster.

Well, like you, I follow the speed limits posted. Why risk speeding to try and get to where I am going faster when really, I could get pulled over, get a speeding ticket, and not only then in the long run will it take me longer to get there, I will have to pay a heafty ticket. Honestly, by going 5-10 miles over the speed limit, you really don't save yourself that much time and maybe at most will get to where you are going 1-5 minutes sooner. I acutally tried going 5 miles over the speed limit on a 3 1/2 hr trip one way and the speed limit the other and saved only a mezzly 10 minutes. Well, that 10 minutes really wouldn't have saved me time if I would have gotten pulled over since then it probably would have really taken an extra 10 minutes maybe.

So, just keep following the posted limits and dont let the speeders piss you off. I sure dont and those that tailgate, I just slow down and if they want to go around me, they will and if not oh well. They hit me, they'll be the ones at fault since they were following too closely anyway. They could get ticketed for following too close for conditions and maybe even for causing the accident.

Your question seems not so much to be about speeding than about dangerous driving in general. I frequently exceed the speed limit, but not by very much. For example, I personally don't find up to 85 mph to be excessive on a motorway. On a 60mph limit, I would tend not to go over 70mph however, although I'd be lying if I said I never did. What I never do though is tailgate or overtake dangerously. And I always observe speed limits in town. The speed limits were devised, I believe, in the late 1950s and you would have to admit that cars then were very different to cars today. I drive a Saab which is about as safe as you can get and I am very considerate to other road users.

However, if you drive at speeds above the legal limit, you have to accept that there is a chance of getting a fine. I, like a huge percentage of the population, do the usual cruise along at a constant speed only to have to reduce the speed rapidly on sight of a Gatso machine. It's just the way it is.

People should stop walking in the road, cars kill if they hit you!

Most speed limits are a farce, they were brought in to reduce fuel consumption in the 1960's, a campaign for the abolition of the speed limit should be brought in immediately.

Cars spend less time on the road the faster they go, so increasing road speed reduces congestion.

There is no need for driving above the speed limit because chances are, somewhere further down the road you will be held up anyway.

If someone is stupid enough to break the speed limit and is caught, tough titty, they should pay up and shut up, cos it is no one elses fault but their own.

I would also like to point out that dangerous driving is not just the speeders out there, the slowcoaches are also putting others at risk by their inability to drive at a reasonable pace - there will always be the impatient driver behind the slowcoach who will try to get past them, with awful consequences.

Good question.

Just last week in my state, a woman was talking on her cellphone and speeding, not paying attention to the road. She ended up crashing with another car and taking out a power pole. It has been proven over and over again that speeding and talking on a cell phone do not mix.

Speeding problems will never be eliminated no matter what is done. It is up to me and you, and all other safe drivers, to watch out for ourselves while driving on the roadways.

Be safe out there.

It's because speed cameras, oh, sorry, "Safety" cameras are sited in inappropriate places, meaning they are just revenue generators.

How many speed cameras do you see outside schools?

How many speed cameras do you see on long straight roads where the limit mysteriously dropped by 10mph since the camera was installed?

QED?

You drive at the limit, good for you. The guy that hits you from behind will be in the wrong, so let them tail-gate away.

Additional:
They aren't mind readers who know about your spinal damage from 20 years ago. No doubt they tail-gate everyone. Maybe if you sped up by 5 mph they wouldn't tail-gate? Just a thought...

Additional v2:
Round here the speed cameras are well known, and *not* in accident black-spots. Just on fast stretches of road. And I didn't say the speed limits changed randomly. *sigh*.
Admit it, your rant is not about speeding but about people tail-gating and queueing behind you. That speaks volumes.

I want 100 mph speed limit on motorways and duel carriageways but I also want a blanket speed limit of 10 mph outside schools enforced by armed police.

Your question sounds like verbal road rage! Pull over and take a breather.

I agree.
I always stick to the speed limits, and hate when i have someone come speeding up behind me,flashing their lights!
It's like "Helloooo,i'm not gonna get a ticket for your impatient @ss!".
Speed limits are there for a reason. It even says on TV ad's,that if you hit someone at 30mph,they have a high survival chance. Hit them at 35mph,and they'll probably die.
If i was in a rush,i'd rather drive 5mph slower, than have someones death on my conscience for the rest of my life.
