it appears to me due to some technicalities India specific questions is automatically being offered to USA members. if i understand correctly the questioner is from India and the question is India SPECIFIC.
my answer is yes. we all are to defend the imaginary enemies in this globalised world. and we include civilians in uniforms ( i.e Military) and civilians without uniforms ( i.e civilians in military glossary). in the era of nuclear confusion no country small or big would venture to capture a country phisically without the support ( may be small % ) of the natives. For us Pakistan is an imaginary enemy. and China is a big brother ( whether we like it or not, this is the present assesment. To be able to contain imaginaryas well as Big enemy we need to grow economically and become self reliant in all aspects incl military arsenal. one can not fight the battles and win a war dependent on USA/UK/ISRAEL/RUSSIA for battle tanks, ammunitions, missile launchers or radars, fighter jets etc etc.
it is therefore all indian in or without uniform to work hard to make our country self reliant, fight the enemy within and win and then make arsenal and get trained and then defend or attack. a standing army can only defend ( with weapons from foreign countries ). unless all able bodied men are trained ( through conscriptions ) militarily we can dev our country to be a real big.
if the aim is to live peaceful existence we ought to
japan. if aim is to self destruct we are to Israel model.choice is yours.

It shouldn't be made compulsory. There are many things to be taken into consideration.
First of all what are you trying to achive from this. This serves the purpose that everyone is familiar with army systems and procedures that in case of emergency the army can recruit people who has some background in this field. They need not train a novice from start at critical times. This is not valid in India. India has a huge population so everybody need not be trained in army. Making everybody go through army training will be a huge expense. Only people with some inclination for the job should go to the army. It will be even difficult for India to accomodate everyone who want to come on their own.
Secondly this applies to war time strategies. We are not in war times and it will never come back. The war that we saw in world war 1 and 2 can not come back. Now if a war like that erupts it is an end. Nobody can survive from the war. What for the neuclear weapons are for. Do you think that you will not use it if you are losing in the war? The war time is over. If ever a war comes that will be the end. The old type wars have finished. So you dont require much man power in military.
Most importantly the military training. This training is to make a man robot. It will kill any intelligence left in man. He will be trained not to think. Just execute the order.Don't think about what is told. Your duty is just to execute it. That is the meaning of all the left right parades. Be a robot just follow as it is told. Slowly slowly your intelligence will be dull. You will become insensitive. Do you want to spoil the life of every person in India. Countries which has a small population is left without an option. But not us.

Yes!
I served 19 years and was proud to serve my country and family. I served in Iraqi Freedom until I got injured and was medically discharge. The armed services builds caricature and strength in your body. Anyone wanting to get free money for college should have to serve at least 6 months to a year. The idea is good but it will never take off because there are too many mother and fathers that think the military is not good enough for their son or daughter.

The big problem is that compulsory service would create a huge government bureaucracy. The cost would be enormous and the work would essentially deny the private sector the necessary labor of that segment of the population. While I do think that the military environment would instill a degree of discipline that would make all participants more productive, I doubt it could retain that rigor if everyone participated and we didn't have a war to justify it. I think a better system would be to require basic training and leave it at that.

May not be necessary for our country under the present normal peaceful democratic setup.
However there is a Defense Ministry at the center controlling all the matters connected with the Army, Navy, and Air force both at the times of war and peace, for all assessment matters connected with additional establishments, Recruitments, deployments of personnel of various cadre in various concerned fields on war footing basis or otherwise, at any time to fight out the enemy.

Yes. Everyone in Israel is required to serve two years in the military in some capacity. The same could be done here but not all would necessarily be needed in the military during peace time, so some might need to serve the public in some way instead.

I have advocated this point for compulsory service for at least 20 years now. Persons between the ages of 18- 25 should have to give at least 3 years service in some capacity.

No, the military does not want draftees of any type. People who don't want to be there are a control problem. They do not pay attention to the situation at hard and will get their fellow soldiers killed.
Have a compulsory nation service to work in hospitals or conservation and labor projects, but not in the military. Draft young people to build dams or replant trees, teach them to do something constructive with their lives, but for God's sake keep them out of the military!!

Good concept if you think about it. No wasted time to recruit. It makes fair to everyone, and no excemption because some people are rich. One good reason is this. The whole nation will be fully prepared. No shortcomings of personnel when the fan starts blowing!!! Also this will send a "STRONG MESSAGE" around the glove, or to those troubled parts of the world that we are ready to meet any burden anywhere at any give time...All citizen of this country should contribute its faif share to defend freedom at home and abroad...

Well no, the military is volunteer for a reason. First of all a volunteer military tends to work better. Second, there are some people that just can't handle the pressure. Third a 1 year stint is silly. It would have to be at least 4 years.
