I like Cortland's the best. Apparently different varieties of apples ripen at different times. I've been to several orchards this past week and they all say it's too early for Cortland's. I ask when they will be selling them and they just shrug and say something to the effect "When they're ready." So...when do Cortland's ripen enough to sell...early October, mid-October, late October?

The average season for Cortlands is late September to mid-October in the mid to northern U.S., but this depends mainly on the year's weather. Temperature and precipitation extremes as well as other freakish weather can delay the apple season. Last year, in my area, there was an early summer frost that just about put the kibosh on the apple farms. Most orchards imported fruit from other areas so they would have something to sell.

Here is an informative site that give a lot of info on all types of apples:

I was at an orchard this weekend, and I was told to wait until the Columbus Day weekend. So, I'll be out there on the 8, picking to my heart's content.

They're available throughout the year, September to April, but they're usually better and cheaper in the fall.

Best idea is to call the farm before you go to check on availability.
