Female birds lay eggs when they come to breeding age. Because of instinct, they will sit on the eggs and wait for them to hatch. If your bird is spending all of its time sitting on the egg rather than eating, I would recommend removing the egg.

Chickens will start to lay eggs as soon as they come into maturity, it is like with women where we ovulate, they will just lay eggs. It will be her instinct to lay on the egg even though it has not been fertilised by a male chicken.
I would try and take the egg away from her if you can, as she will start to come very broody, and off course the egg is not going to hatch so it will eventually go off.
But it is nothing to worry about.

Hens will begin to sit on their eggs when they become broody. Your little girl has probably reached the age at which she feels that she should raise a clutch of youngerster.
Obviously, if you don't have a rooster, the eggs won't hatch. If you want your hen to continue laying, be brave and collect the eggs from under her. She may peck, but it doesn't hurt much and this will keep her healthy. She won't be spending all that time laying on some eggs that won't hatch when she can be foraging for goodies.

Chickens lay eggs - that's what they do; without a Cockerel the eggs won't be fertile but they'll still taste excellent.
If you're asking why you don't have a male chicken then I'm afraid I can't answer that one.

it is normal for a chicken to sit on eggs but if you really dont want her to sit on the eggs keep pushing her off the nest every day or just let her go through her cycle.

Perfectly natural... she has gone broody.... she would normally sit on a clutch .... do make sure she has water and food handy as she will try and sit for about thee weeks and will loose a lot of weight ... Hens do not get formal biology lessons and the significance of being trodden by a **** bird will have escaped her.
What she is doing comes naturally to her.. she is trying however futile it may be. to propagate her genes.

If you don't have a rooster, and the hen lays infertile eggs, you need to collect them and not leave them in the nest. It is a normal instinct for a hen to set her eggs when the nest is full, so don't leave them in her nest.
