Those who think that religion is all about getting into heaven are always in a quandary. They don't want to go to the trouble of trying to manipulate God (praying, going to church, etc.) unless there is a chance that God actually exists.
But Christianity is all about seeking God and Him alone and not about heaven at all.
As you have well said, seek deep within yourself and see if you're just trying to manipulate God to get what you want.
