Actually, I am painfully shy and tend to wait until they seem to think I hate them because of that. It comes as a total surprise.
So...no I am not ugly or gross, just really shy. I guess I answered my own question.

I was having a quiet drink when a nice woman came up and asked me out. I accepted and we have now been married for 15 years.

Because they don't want to go out with the woman asking. If the woman had made friends with the guy first, she might have better luck. It could also be that the guy is shy, and doesn't know how to handle it, so he runs.
