The United Nations is not a nation/state and does not have armed forces with rank and insignia. Individual UN members contribute troops and equipment for use in UN sponsored missions.

The blue beret worn by some "UN troops" simply indicate that they are part of the UN peacekeeping force/mission in question.

You can't because all the different countries who participate in the U. N. peace-keeping efforts continue to use their national rank insignia.

However nearly all contingents wear either Blue Helmets with UN Insignia, blue baseball-caps, blue Boonie-hats or blue berets, all with UN insignia.

While in South Lebanon all UNIFIL Vehicles carrying a pennant were saluted when passing through checkpoints regardless of who was inside.

When in doubt salute!!! :-P

If you can identify the nation a soldier comes from in a picture then you can do an on-line search for that particular countries rank insignia and structure.
