It's wonderful that you are trying to help that little cutie.
If he is not getting worse fast he may not need treatment. Was the degeneration of his mouth rapid or slow? has the "deterioration" it stopped?
It might be a form of cancer, a bacteria, virus, or a parasite. I'm sorry, I don't know what it is.
I think if the vet didn't know that it probably is abnormal cell growth (cancer), or a virus that has hopefully run its course.
Good luck.. Give him lots of treats. If he starts getting thin, you'll have to feed him by hand.

Do you mean the mouth is swelled so there's no distinction of an upper lip compared to the inner mouth? That sounds like an allergic reaction, not a disease.
Has the cat been bitten by any snakes? Do you have rattlers or other vipers in your area?

If there is a university nearby with a veterinary school, this might be a good thing to ask them about. If they need veterinary referral, you can ask. Most vets will agree they don't know everything. We had a cat with an eye problem that ended up going to the veterinary school for his procedure and was fine afterwards. In addition to getting treatment for your cat, it is educational for the upcoming vets.

Did this just occur or was the cat born with it.Almost sounds like a cleft lip like humans are born with.
Contact UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis, CA.Send pictures if possible to them.

it maybe a cancer eating at your cats mouth and face

taking a look at your cat
and may even have a possible solution for this

It sounds to me like your cat has picked up a strain bacteria that eats flesh. Has your vet done any kind of blood work?? There is a flesh-eatting bacteria that has been seen is some drug abusers, could be your cat has some mutated strain. Hope this may help.

Hi
Is the problem inside the mouth or on the face? I have female that had Feline Acne, it was on her chin, that 's what they called it, maybe your cat has that too. All it takes is some antibiotics, but they can have reoccurring problems, kinda like people...

the cat may have contacted a virus that damaged its lip and pallet - since humans can't tell when cats are sick (unless it is obvious), illnesses can go undetected
