I think there's really nothing wrong with any religion. If people want to worship a hot pink gym shoe, let them! The only bad things about religion are the fact that since there are so many religions, they all think their religion is the only TRUE and RIGHT one... This is where intolerance comes in... This is why church members get out there to try and gain new members... This is what makes non-believers so angry w/ believers for "pushing their religion" on people who don't want to hear it.

Religion works on faith. It's asking for people to believe in things (including moral rules) without evidence or reasoned opinion.

In my opinion, that's a recipe for disaster. It sets up resistance to new ideas, moral philosophies and scientific discoveries that may offer better alternatives to religious belief, but cannot be explored due to the fanaticism of the old system. Kepler, Bruno, and Galileo are good examples from Europe: All of them were oppressed (Bruno was burned at the stake) for their accomplishments in astronomy.

Do you really wish to believe in a specific deities with religious names, stories, and practices, when the universe is too large and ancient to be explained by simple answers?

Here's a simulation of 20 million galaxies, a small part of our visible universe. Think about it. You'd spend more than one lifetime counting the stars in a single galaxy. Earth isn't even visible. Existence doesn't revolve around human beings or play by our simple customs.

I think religion is something from the old days (Dark Ages to Medieval) That didn't quite go away when the world began it's super moderation into the 20th cen.

Now the 21st cen. is when these old ideas clash with the new ones of today and whoever wins will determine where humanity goes.

Religion is little more than man's attempt to understand God. That's why you have so many.

Salvation is God reaching out to man. The Bible His love letters to help you understand who He is and how He wants you to live.

If just being good was enough then Christ died for nothing. He's a holy God demanding 100%. But He knew we couldn't meet the mark so He came in the human form as a baby. Lived among us, was tempted but never sinned. Being man he could understand our failings. But as both He could die in our stead. Being God He conquered death.

Since flesh is lower than spirit He awaits to be glorified fully and calls God His father. But he stands before the throne of God making intercession for us. The devil cries "That man murdered". Jesus says "yes, I know. But my blood covered it". He was the sacrificial lamb. The debt for sin entered through one man so it took the death of a perfect man to pay it. All have sinned and fallen short no matter how hard we try.

His death was enough. We can't add to it or take away from it. He also never takes away our freewill. That's why Hebrews says some will only enter by the skin of their teeth. But He has a plan for our life. Often it involves suffering & pain as well as joy. But there's a purpose to it all. Nothing is by chance when God has your life.

Plus I'd like to ask you this. If being good was enough then I dare say heaven wouldn't be a place I'd like to be. Remember the saying the road to hell is paved with good intentions. When so many concessions were made to Hitler for peace it gave him a power beyond his wildest real dreams. It ended up killing millions before he was stopped. So is it ok what the other powers did since they did it in hopes of not having to go to war?

We go through life with a great crowd of witnesses. We often never know when something we said or did in innocence or to be nice resulted in great harm or death to another. No word or action is void. All have consequences whether we're aware of them or not. I don't know about you but personally I need someone to guide me. But not another flawed human being like myself.

Organized religion is the best device around for controlling mass groups of people.

Believe in what YOU want, not what someone else trains you to believe.

Well it's obviously fiction, but more importantly it's fiction promoted by cynical leaders in order to manipulate the population and thereby maintain their own power, wealth and prestige.

I am a christian and I love being one. God just wants you to live your life in a way that is respectable and "good". aka follow the 10 commandments. but everyone falters and he is there to forgive and to love. Having faith in God has gotten me and many people I know through numerous hard times. And if you chose to not believe in god and when you die it is real you lose everything, but if you believe and it is not real you lose nothing.

Religion is simple minded.
Just follow your own good natured instincts.
You sound like a great person, keep asking questions.

Listening to God isn't about "religion". Religion won't save you from hell....and that is what listening to God is all about. You can't "earn" your way...because God said "not by works that we have done, but by His mercy He saves us"......it is His gift to us....and we love Him, because He first loved us.

God does want you to be nice to people and "love your neighbor as yourself"...but first He wants you to love Him....and His Son, Jesus Who He sent to die for you, in your place on the cross. It was our "penalty" for sin, that He paid for us.

You see...because of Adam's sin, we all are born with a sinful nature...and the wages of sin is death....eternal death and separation from God.....because He is a holy God and can't accept sin. But God had a plan....and sent His only Son, Jesus who was also holy and without sin, to be born in earth for the entire reason of dying in our place...and then God said, "whosoever (anyone) who chooses to believe on My Son, has eternal life....but He(or she) who has not the Son, shall not see Life(eternal life), and the wrath of God abides on them".

He doesn't force anyone, but does not want anyone to perish for all eternity...but He gives each person a choice to make.
And when Jesus was here, before he died and rose again on the third day (the reason we celebrate Easter), He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, but by Me". And that is the whole truth, and the whole story.

It is so simple, a child can find Jesus as his personal Savior, but it involves saying...."O.K....I want your death to be for me....in my place, I want You to be my Savior, and I will follow You. There is a personal decision, and a personal commitment involved. It is a gift from God...totally free....but it is the hardest thing for individuals to see that "I can't save myself"...I need Jesus!

And it is not "religion". It is a personal relationship with Jesus.....because it changes you into a new person in Him.
It can't be explained...it can't be forced....it is a choice....and amazing things will happen in your life when you follow God's way, instead of your own....allow Him to work in your life, learn in His Word, the Bible what is His message to you....just awesome things happen!

So my answer is God is really true....God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit...three in one....and not Allah, and not Buddah....there is only one true God and He wants you to love Him!....it is what He did for you that matters first. Then He says....Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your mind, and all your strength....and then to Love your neighbor as yourself. These are His two greatest commandments.
