Why did they go with this design? Why not a more conventional helmet? Wouldn't the soldiers' ability to hear be diminished with this style of helmet?

Issued to the more specialist units, Its more ballistically protective, being more round the bullet / shrapnel tends to slide around the curve and ricochet off, rather than go through which happens a lot with the old conventional style.
I believe they have the option of fitting throat mikes and ear pieces for close communication amongst the troop.
