This is a touchy subject because members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consider these garments to be especially sacred - they are not a topic for casual conversation. A lot of people misunderstand the sacred garment and, therefore, Latter-day Saints aren't sure if a question is honest or not.
The garment is a peice of clothing representative of a covenant made to Heavenly Father. It is there, in part, to remind one of the covenants made.
Many religions have sacred clothing such as the Jews and some Christians (for example, the cross that is sometimes worn around the neck).
Also, as a side point in response to Valley's question above, the church does sell the garments but the garments are sold for the price it cost to make them. They can be given to a person free if the person demonstrates the need, as I understand it.
The misunderstandings about the LDS church could fill the Grand Canyon. Make sure to ask members of the LDS Church what they believe and not those who have left the church and now fight against it. For example, if you wanted to know about a certain company, would you ask people who are currently working for that company or would you ask someone who was fired or was disgruntled from that company?
Anywho...search for truth with an open mind and NEVER give up!

This is a topic that should be answered by A MORMON not people who think they know. This is a very sacred topic and should not be made fun of in the way it is being portrayed right now. They are called GARMENTS not magic underwear, not underoos or any other name. They are a sacred and holy thing between the person wearing them and god. and it is not a thing to be made fun of all they stand for are the promises that those people make with god. and not every Mormon wears them. If they went on a mission or got married in on of our temples then they would wear them, but not everyone does. and I think your Moms and Dads should have brought you all up better cause no one has any respect for anyone on here those are things that we hold very sacred.

How many of your other friends causally mention their underwear?
Mormons who have entered and made sacred covenants in a temple receive undergarments that likewise sacred to them. The garments, if worn properly, can be a reminder to the wearer to maintain the sacred covenants entered into and therefore they act as a protection to the wearer.
Many religions have sacred clothing. Nothing unusual there. And to all those that use the derogatory "magical" term, what's up with that uninformed comment? I guess you could say that the garments are as magical as anyone else's faith in God is magical.

Noone is ashamed of anything
There we go another idiot that likes to tell mormons what they believe and how they think
Garments are just sacred clothing worn once you take out your ordinances in the temple. It is much like the garments of muslim women worn, but it is under the clothes. It is considered very sacred which is why mormons dont talk about it, much like the temple ordinances. It has nothing to do with shame.
I love the people that bash on mormons for specific beliefs or mock things we consider sacred. It shows how petty, rude, hateful and childish they really are.
bytheway, mormon clergy are UNPAID
All the money taken in by the church and the investments of the church are put one hundred percent back into the building of new churches, missionary work and the extensive welfare and disaster relief programs.
The church pays taxes on investments that are required to pay taxes on and it has its own farms and canneries to make food storage and food supplies for those that are in need.

They're called garments. Adult Mormons wear them, I believe for some type of spiritual protection. There are even extra stitches over the nipples and bellybutton for extra protection.

Seriously this question has been asked and answered a TON around here. You should do a search.
***************************************************************
Oh, I see the bashers are out. Ok, do you make fun of a priest and his holy garments that he wears on the outside yo show as a reminder of the covenants he made with God? No? When a worthy adult goes to the temple for the first time they make SACRED covenants with Father. I wear them under my clothing as a reminder to me. So what is weird? I love having a reminder. Some people wear crucifixes, rosary beads. My under garments also help me to dress modestly. Before I went to the temple for the first time I looked very forward to going and this is one of the big reasons I was excited. They are not magical. They don't perform spells. They are what I just wrote.
Could people please have some respect for something that is very sacred to me?!
