Alex,
If we can extract DNA from dinosaur bones, then we can extract DNA from the SoT.

Ye Olde Canadian,
I would not have to know Joseph's DNA coding. That is the beauty of the problem. All I would need was Mary's DNA, which is available. If the DNA of the SoT matched Mary's, and only Mary's, then it can be proven that immaculate conception occurred. If the SoT had DNA of Mary and someone else, then there was no immaculate conception.

There is also the Sudarium of Oviedo. This would have been the small cloth placed over the faced of the deceased prior to being wrapped in a shroud. That is in Oviedo Italy, I believe. It has matching blood stain to the shroud. The blood type was taken on that and it was reported as being AB positive.

A search for Sudarium of Oviedo or shroud of Oviedo may show the web sites for it. I am just not sure of the first word. The corresponding blood satin appear to be identical although more on the facial covering that the shroud.

I am not sure DNA would be obtainable but if it was, this would have to be done with the blessing of the Church and I think they do not allow any real serious testing or use of much material.

Joseph Hanlon, writing in New Scientist, raises an interesting possibility of 2 shrouds:
“But could there have been a double fake, one in the 14th century and another in the last century? The shroud was widely shown in the 15th and 16th centuries, but not later. Could it be that the first fraud became too obvious? . . . Might the shroud’s owners have done a better job in that time, using modern technology and medical knowledge, including tests such as Barbet’s, and using ancient linen from the middle east? Might a statue have been created solely for this purpose, heated to give an impression on the cloth, and then destroyed? . . . Nevertheless, there have been a number of sophisticated Victorian archaeological frauds, so we cannot ignore this possibility.”
Others have suggested the use of a mixture of myrrh and aloes rubbed over a bas-relief (a picture with three-dimensional features) to produce a similar image.

News stories last-week cast doubt on the claims that the shroud was faked. Turns out - the swatch they tested way back then was "from a patch."

Even if you could extract meaningful DNA, there is nothing to match it against. The Romans kept good records, but not blood samples.

Even if we had something to compare the DNA to, it is very doubtful any sort of DNA can be extracted from the shroud [if it were real].
DNA doesn't last forever.

The Shroud of Turin was damaged in a fire, so any DNA would be destroyed or damaged.

Do you know what Joseph's DNA coding was?

If not, then you can't prove a thing...
