A few things:
- Buy basic foods, not highly processed, pre-prepared foods, and cook things from scratch.
- Buy food in bulk. Anything that keeps, like rice or pasta, is usually better value in bulk quantities.
- Grow you own vegetables if you can. Nothing tastes better than what you've grown yourself. Plus, your own vegetables will be the freshest you can get.
- If you can't grow your own vegetables, buy what is in season.
- Check out local Farmer's Markets, straight from the farmer to you, cutting out the middle man and saving money. And the quality and freshness is great.
- Buy homebrand items.
- Not sure if there is such a thing where you are, but here (Australia) we have a supermarket chain called NQR, which stands for Not Quite Right. They sell perfectly good food, sometimes the packaging might be dented, or it might be a discontinued line. Usually, they sell their food for a fraction of the money you would pay in a normal supermarket.

I base my meals around pasta, potatoes or rice or homemade bread because it's much more filling and you can make 2 quality loaves for the price on one ok loaf at the store. Soups and stews are inexpensive. Joining a gleaners group is very helpful as you get food free or very close to free that would otherwise go to waste. You can always check out www.all-about-meat and get their free special report How I Feed My Family of Ten on $100 a week- it's got lots of ideas, menu, recipes etc. Plus if you use meat it tells how to "eat steak on a hamburger budget and save$$$. Most of the site is based on the book by John Smith called Confessions of a Butcher- eat steak on a hamburger budget and save$$$

Buy items in bulk pasta, rice, Asian noodles etc.
Then base your meals around these items.
Also, by foods the require YOU to do the most work. For example, by a whole chicken (MUCH cheaper!) de bone it yourself and use all of it. You can even go one line and watch a video on how to do it. You can buy a whole chicken for around $5 or so and use all of it. That is compared to buying boneless breasts which will cost you a lot more than $5 and you are getting less food to boot!
I eat all of the chicken, I use the bones for chicken stock, I use the fat collected from the stock for cooking and I make cracklins out of the skin. (Not good for you but tasty and dirt cheap. You never said healthylol).
Also, eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies these are good for you and cheap.
Also, think of various ethnic foods where for better or worse the majority of people in those areas are poor. For example, South American food is delicious and cheap.
Stay way from: exspensive cuts of beef, exspensive cheeses , liquor, ice cream, candy, potatoe chips, cream etc.
The key here is to eat all FRESH foods and nothing that has been pre made for you.
Fresh herbs ad a lot of flavor and are cheap.
My wife and I just had grilled chicken (around $2) with chimi churi (which is a South American type of salsa) around .50 cents, rice around .25 cents, grilled Choyote Sqaush around $1 and a $2 bottle of wine. That is a delicious meal cheap! The chicken stock we used to make the rice more flavorful was more or less free!
Get lots of onions and garlic cheap and can ad lots of flavor to almost anything you make.
You have to think ethnic and think about what is FRESH and what is requiring YOU to do the work. Anything where the work is done for you (see above) is going to cost you a lot more.
Check out local farmers markets for your produce these are usually cheaper and better quality than the super market anyways. I can make a cheap run to the farmers market and make a delicious cheap meal based on that cheap purchase and what I have on hand.
When I am properly stocked I can make a great meal for 2 for under $5! Well ok $7 since we love out $2 wine. lol!
I beg you do NOT go and eat off of the cheap menus at the fast food places. This is both disgusting and will make you sick.
You CAN make great food cheap you just have to stock up, learn how to cook properly and be creative.
Think about what poor people in other parts of the world live on.

Go to a store like costco and buy in bulk. And of course buy the generic brands. Also if you poor, you can go to a local post office or library, i think its twice a month and they give away boxes of food with milk and cheese n meat n all that.

Coupons! And buy items that are on sale. Grocery stores have weekly sales. Sales+ coupons= Saving money
It may sound strange but digging through your neighbors' recycling bin and getting extra coupons can help you stock up on coupons for toothpaste, canned goods...etc.

Don't go grocery shopping without a detailed list.
Do not buy anything that is not on that list.
ALWAYS eat something filling before you go grocery shopping. If you go hungry, you'll buy everything in the store!
