The dealer will tell you when the action is up to you, he will tell you if there is a raise, he will tell you how much is in the pot if you ask him, he will tell you how much you can raise or what your option are, but he can't tell you how to play your hand at all. The dealer is there to make sure the pot is right, that the rake is right, that the rules are being enforced to all the players. It is the dealers job to make sure that the game runs smooth. So if you ask im sure that the dealer or Even people at the table will help you, just as long as no one helps you play your hand it is fine to ask for help in what your options are.

I agree with davster. It's best to take advantage of free online places like pokerstars.net or any others to get the feel of it. That way, you can at least "act" like you know what you're doing when you go live. I haven't gone live yet, but have gone from $2000 fake money to over $32,000 fake money in about a year. It's fun and there's no pressure of loosing your "real" money. When you feel you're ready for real money...there's an option there to do so and you can start out small (I've done a few nickle/dime games).

Absolutely. The dealer controls the cards and the betting.

They'll usually point to you and say check, bet or raise, or tell you if you're light on the blinds. My confusion gets down to the final four or less when there's ante's and larger blinds changing every half hour or so, at that point i have to rely on the dealer.

If you don't seem to be betting, he will say something like "your bet sir" and if you act confused he will likely explain with something like "the bet is $100 sir".
If you aren''t comfortable knowing when to bet, best to play some at the play money internet tables such as PokerStars.net. It does nottake long at all, perahps 20 minutes to know the flow at the table.
