Below are some resources.
In my experience, Meditation is "Being Here, Now."
It is being aware, it is seeking, but it is also not seeking. It is not self realizing or self conscious. It is simple. Meditation is Sitting or Walking or Living mindfully.

There are different forms or ways to do meditation.
You can sit in a place quiet, by yourself where no one will disturb you and take a deep breath to relax. Then you can think of a pool of water beside you. As you relax with your eyes closed, try to eliminate all your thoughts. when one comes up, cast it into the water and continue until your mind is free from thoughts. Start off my meditating for about 15 minutes and work your way up to a half an hour.
Other forms of mediation are guided meditations. You can by a CD and sit or lie down and close your eyes and listen while someone guides you through a meditation. It may be a story.
The best guided meditations I have found were by Dick Sutphin.
There are also walking meditations and meditations you do with drumming or crystal bowls. or chanting OM. and or listening to music.
The benifits are for the health of your mind, bidy and spirit.
You may find yourself falling asleep while doing it.
I sometimes meditate to fall asleep.

Meditation describes a state of concentrated attention on some object of thought or awareness.
Classic sitting meditation is a vital part of all meditation traditions and has taken many forms, some more effective than others. Some traditional approaches demand that the student sit motionless for hours on end, as if becoming a frozen human statue is the key to enlightenment. A more scientific approach does not make the human body our enemy, but rather works with our natural physiology to allow more intense meditation with less effort and discomfort. Masochism is not an effective path to self-realization.

There are many different kinds of meditation.
The sort of meditation I practice is guided meditation, which means listening to a recording or a person as they guide you with words, music, and sounds in order to achieve a goal.
The goal can be relaxation, sleep, mental clarity, self-esteem, or any number of other things.
You can get an example of what I mean here -
http://www.meditainment.com/secret-garden/
This should cover the basic concepts of different forms of meditation, and should provide sources (at bottom of page) where you can learn more.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meditation
With any kind of meditation, the more you practice it, the better you get at it. You learn to better control your mind and thought processes. If you begin to practice meditation, you may not notice much of an effect at first... but if you continue trying to achieve the techniques of breathing, clearing your mind, visualization, and so on, it'll become progressively easier and more effective.

A serious question. However it has to be answered by a Guru.
Let there be no confusion. the primary aim of meditation is spiritual evolution. Not surprisingly, such a lofty goal appeals only to the rare few. If Joel Stein's Time magazine feature article entitled "Just Say Om " yields some indication of what most people want from this ancient contemplative art, any sort of evolution at all is far down the list. Still, the subject is there right on the cover of Time, even referred to with dignity as the "Science of Meditation." And science is the key word here. Much of the article has to do with proving the benefits of meditation scientifically.
From Stein's point of view, meditation is most beneficial as a means to good health physical, emotional and mental, in that order. Apparently, a lot of people agree with him. According to Stein, ten million American adults now say they practice some form of meditation regularly, twice as many as a decade ago, and mainly for health benefits.
"Contentment and inner peace are nice, " says Stein. "But think how many Americans would start meditating if you could convince them they would live longer because of it."
Meditation classes are now being offered in schools, hospitals, law firms, prisons, governmental and corporate offices even airports. West Point Naval Academy offers a course on meditation.
This escalating popularity of such an ancient Indian art is most certainly fueled by the fact that many meditators are famous.
"Recent studies show that meditation can boost the immune system, " he says. "The current interest is as much medical as it is cultural. Meditation is being recommended by physicians as a way to prevent, slow or at least control the pain of chronic diseases like heart conditions, AIDS, cancer and infertility. What's exciting about the new research is how meditation can train the mind and reshape the brain. Tests using the most sophisticated imaging techniques suggest that it can actually reset the brain."
Howard Beckman, Director of the Vedic Cultural Fellowship in New Mexico says, Meditation is a yogic practice aimed at self-realization and gaining greater ability to advance spiritually, not simply a practice to combat material stress and anxiety."

It gives me peace - and the ability to create peace when things are going crazy.
There are tons of ways to meditate - the important thing is to find something that allows your head and your feet to occupy the same place and time. Shoot, when I started meditation was playing pacman because it was hard to think about bill collectors calling when I was trying not to be eaten by blinky...
that was years ago....now I sit quietly for about 20 minutes in the evening and simply let my mind wander while I dismiss 90% of my thoughts as junk. Oddly, its comforting to know that most of my worries are non-sense and will pass.
Its about where you put your attention.
Good Luck - Peace

It brings you into yourself. It brings you to know your creator. It revitalizes you. You sit very quietly and let your mind empty of all thoughts. It is kinda hard, but with practice, you can master it. It should be done the same time everyday, If you wake up at the same time in the night, then this is your meditation time. Good Luck.
Love and God Bless

I can't shut my mind, so I meditate by picturing good things in my mind. If I intend to improve my health, I picture green light around me, I picture a forest and I picture a native-Indian coming close to me. If I just want to relax, I picture a blue light, the ocean, or Virgin Mary embracing me. If I am in trouble or struggling with something, I picture Jesus dressed in white blessing my head in a garden full of daisies. I always relax, pay attention to my breathing, say a little prayer and just picture things like that. Sometimes in my back yard, sometimes in my bedroom.
Peace!
