Introduction to Scientology
The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of."
Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:
Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized — and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.
In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.

Southpark had an episode a while ago, but I don't believe it was aired in the US because Tom Cruise made a big stink about it and threatened not to promote Mission Impossible 3 if the Broadcasting Company...I think Universal....aired the show. you should be able to find it on You Tube. Just look for Southpark Scientology. There is a portion in the show that says/shows what they actually believe...it even says "what scientologists actually believe" at the bottom of the screen.

Scientology means “knowing how to know” and it is the study of the spirit in relationship to the universe. In accordance Scientology existence is divided in two areas: spiritual and physical. Spiritual existence is represented with the Greek letter Theta (that means thought). All life is theta including God. Theta or life creates and controls space, energy and matter.
Life or theta is senior to the material universe. So Scientology is about thought over matter.
Scientology asserts “all that all your problems are in you mind” and that you are fully responsible for your existence.
Scientology is a practical religious philosophy, is not a believe system, in Scientology you can believe in anything you want. But the practice of Scientology is an exact and precise practice that requires years of training to master. It is believed that through this practice a better life can be achieved and all the riddles of the universe are solved.

It seems like a dangerous cult. Their primary belief is the dianetics "theory" invented by L. Ron Hubbard. In surface, it seems to make sense. For example, it says that you need to remove the obstacles (which they call engrams) to develop your full potential. They propose courses to achieve the result. Except for the funny name "engrams", the logic seems good.
We cannot reject everything that is new, but yet we don't want to lose our precious time with a dangerous cult. Nowadays corruption prevails in our governments and even within religions. How can someone trust the information that he receives?
To help you, I made a search on Google Scholar to see what science had to say. I think that Google Scholar is relatively safe, but still one must use his judgment. Here is the result: http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?hl=en&lr=&q=scientology&btnG=Search
There was a lot of research on its political agenda, its conflicts with many important organizations, including its take-over of its internationally influential opponent, the Cult Awareness Network (CAN). However, there was basically nothing to support the value of the method. For an organization called "Scientology", that doesn't look good.
They want to receive the status of a religion. Putting science and religion together seems a good idea, at the least for some. However, most countries, including the USA, have not given to them this status. The pro-Scientology will tell you that every new religion is controversial and attacked by the government in place. They have a point. Even modern science was rejected by many at the beginning of the scientific revolution. However, if it is scientific, then we should see some scientific evidence. There is none. At the least, it doesn't show up on Google Scholar. It is just a system with an apparent logic, but with little positive data to support it.
Let's do the same for Christian Protestant. http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?hl=en&lr=&q=Christian+Protestant&btnG=Search
We see studies on the religion, but it is not negative. There is little political controversy reported, etc. At the least, negativity and political conflict is not predominant.
One may say, but protestantism is not a new organization with a new scientific approach. So, let's do a similar search on Google Scholar for Transcendental Meditation. It is not a religion, but it is a new organization that comes from an old tradition of knowledge and it is scientific. The result is http://scholar.google.ca/scholar?q=transcendental+meditation&hl=en&lr=&btnG=Search
You see a lot scientific research that provide strong evidence for its benefits. There is no comparison. I can speak positively about TM, but I see not much positive to say about Scientology.
Anyway, you will have to make your own judgment. Good things can be rejected by many when they are first presented, but I don't think Scientology enters in that category. I hope that what I provided to you is useful.

Most of the answers around here are either long cut-n-paste answers (which are aganst yahoo rules) or short "I saw it on internet" or "its bad cause South Park said so". And very few of those have ever met one or been to one of their centers
I tried it for a bit then left. Good stuff. Mostly they believe that the help for your problems is in yourself, not in drugs or praying to some outside force. Not all of the time of course, but alot more than most people bother trying to work on. They start out with a communications course so you can get along better with the world, then a course on how to study and know things better so you can improve your standing in the world.

Actually you spelled it correctly.
Here's a factual description for you.(From an actual Scientologist) It's as brief and simple as I can make it. Hope you can focus for long enough to read it......
Scientology is an applied religious philosophy. By “applied” is meant that it is for use in life and living. You actually use it in your day to day life to chandge and improve existing conditions. It is a practical religion.
All religions if you study them have a basic philosophy, but they also have certain dogma, rituals and observances and a certain faith or belief is required. There is nothing wrong with this , but Scientology is not that kind of religion. It acknowledges the principle of God or the Supreme Being but does not try to define or describe this principle, leaving it up to the individual.
It is also not a messianic religion. This means there is no worship of prophets or messiahs.
It is not belief or faith based. In Scientology a truth is true for you according to your own observation and experience .
The dictionary definition that applies:
Religion: The spiritual or emotional attitude of one who recognises the existence of superhuman power or powers.
The most basic principle of Scientology is that YOU are your own immortal soul, that this is not a thing you have but what YOU actually are.
Scientology believes or considers that Man is basically good. This is different from many religions that promote that he his natively evil or bad unless “made” good.
The whole purpose of Scientology knowledge application and procedure is to increase an individual’s understanding and awareness of himself and to rehabilitate his native abilities and potential.
When you do this there sphere and zones of his positive influence increases and moves outward into his life , his family and friends, his groups and Mankind of which he is part .
How this result is achieved is the “technology” of Scientology, which was developed by L Ron Hubbard from discoveries he made after extensive research into the field of the mind and the human spirit.
Some of this knowledge was already existing in the ancient texts of the Veda or Vedic Hymns going back 10,000 years. New and additional discoveries were made and fully recorded and codified .
Hubbard published 18 basic books from 1950 to 1953 to fully communicate these basic [rinciples and the path of his research. He completed all his research before his death in 1986 and left all his materials and copyrights to the Church of Scientology’s Religious Technology Centre along with most of his personal estate when he died.
The Church of Scientologisty is currently established and operating internationally in over 160 countries world wide. However it is still a new religion, less than 55 years old.
The true story of Scientology as a religion goes like this:
1. A philosopher developes a philosophy about life and death.
2. People find it interesting.
3. People find it works.
4. People pass it along to others.
5. It grows.
This is just an overview.
L.Ron Hubbard explained fully the theology and technologies of Scientology in more than 500,000 pages of writings, including dozens of books and over 3,000 tape recorded public lectures.

It is actually quite complicated, which is exactly the point. Scientology is a mind control cult that does not want to present a simple system of thought that allows its members freedom of expression, freedom to doubt, and freedom to disagree. It's a complex system of beliefs that can only be fully understood when a person is fully indoctrinated. Please be careful of Scientology and other like pseudo religions.

Basically? It's a more modern and western version of Buddhism. It revolves around ideals of self-help.
My advice is that you don't listen to the media, or most of the people on this site, because they really don't know anything about the religion, so they just believe everything they're told. I know a TON of Scientologists; I know what I'm talking about.
