I haven't used the Microsoft Accounting software yet, but I use QuickBooks everyday to help my clients. I really like it. If you have the money, they also have a POS QuickBooks which interacts with your cash register, which could help keep inventory easily for you with a scanner and credit card machine, - the whole thing. If you just want to keep it simple, I recommend QuickBooks Pro. By the way, QuickBooks 2008 is coming out next week, so don't buy anything yet. Oh, and don't get Peachtree!!! I hate it - it is not as user friendly and it doesn't have some of the features QuickBooks has.

As much as I like Microsoft... I would run QuickBooks... In fact, I would seriously check into QuickBooks Online. It costs about $20 a month which considering that they keep all your records secure, provide backup, and give you access to your records from anywhere make it quite appealing for $20/month. If you need payroll, I believe that is extra but hands down will be a much better solution than Microsoft. PLUS you can try it FREE for one month :)

It kind-of goes down to that old saying... You can be really big and do a lot of things pretty good (Microsoft), or you can focus on one thing and do it very well (QuickBooks)

Microsoft Money is aimed at the home.

There are 2 main products for running a business. Quicken (Quickbooks) and M.Y.O.B.

Generally speaking MYOB is the superior product and has more features than quicken, however both MYOB and Quicken use different accounting models.

For this reason it the process of selecting software usually involves talking to your accountant. Use what they recommend as this will be what they are familar with. It will make things easier in the long run.

Of those two, I would have to go with Quickbooks. Though I don't really like it either. I would use an open-source (free) financial management program like GNUCash myself. But, if I had to go with something commercial and proprietary, I'd probably pick Peachtree which I've provided support for to several clients and did use in my own business for a while. I've also provided support for quickbooks and seen more problems with it that were program issues than Peachtree, where mostly I dealt with issues that were not specifically because of the software.

You might be interested in TinyERP ( http://www.tinyerp.com/home.html ) or another ERP/CRM package which can provide more than just accounting.

Quickbooks is by far the best product for small businesses.

If you search through the old answers (I did this a while back myself with a similar question) I believe most indicated that Microsoft Money is best for home use, but Quicken has more capabilities for small businesses.
