Burns Baby Burns, am I an actual dog? No! There lies the difference. A bastard is a child born out of wedlock plain and simple.

William D, I gave you a thumb up but I am not an actual physical dog I am a human being. A bastard is a child born out of wedlock. If I was to use the word and attribute it to somebody who was not born out of wedlock they would have every right to be offended. BTW, I am not saying to go out and call somebody a bastard. I am saying there are uses for the word even in legal matters.

*******To clarify, if you want to say b*tch as an insult to say somebody is ugly that is an opinion. A bastard is a verifiable truth, a fact.

Kathryn R, I am not Christian and find Christianity hypocritical. Of course it isn't the childs fault but if their parents cared about their future offspring they would not allow them to be brought into the world that way. It is a form of social control.

In years gone by it was considered a horrible thing for a child to be born out of wedlock, indicating that the mother was having sex out of wedlock, which is a sin. Nowadays, people just use the word as a put-down like they use *****, which, incidentally is a valid word as well, isn't it. It literally is a female dog. So, why would you get mad if someone called you a female dog?

Why would you blame the child for something that wasn't their fault?? For all of you people who believe in the Bible and "follow" the Bible and by that I mean "Christians" Should you not fallow the New Testament? IF you fallow the Old testament than you're "Jewish" Jesus told us that the sins of the father are NOT visited on the children when He was asked if the man born Blind was born Blind because of something his father did or did you guys forget that. So if the sins of the father are not visited on the children than why call the child a Bastard because their parents did something that they had no control over???? IS that fair to the child????

You make a very good point. Many, many women have bastards for children. It's like the misuse of the word "f,*****" which is just a bundle of sticks, or "b,itch" which is a female dog.
English sure has some funny word meanings these days. But most people don't believe in illegitimate children anymore because free love and all that trash...
Btw, I'm a Catholic.

Eh, I'm not offended by ANY word.
Many words that we see as derogatory or offensive today were once rather mundane, every-day words.
Words like moron, idiot, retarded, midget, *****, etc.
Words can't hurt you. The intentions behind the words is what hurts.
Oh, for goodness sakes, the starred out b*tch. Wonder how that works out in the dog category.

This word was originally a horrible word to call someone.....because being illegitimate meant you weren't part of "polite" society.....and you were ostracized by your community.
This was less than 50-60 years ago.
The word still holds some weight today.

I think it is a word that should not be used. Why should any child be stigmatized with a negative label? It's a good way to damage a child's psyche and I personally think that is abusive.

As the most intelligent beings on the planet I would think we would want to rise above the lowest possible denominator and become so callous that we don't care how our words effect other people.
If we see someone that's poor trying to make it in life do we address them as just poor trash? I would hope we would try to help them feel better about their plight rather then bring them down further!

It used to (literally) be an awaiting death sentence. The fact that people still have an aversion to it even though it hasn't meant anything other than having an insult directed at you, for many years now, makes me wonder about the reincarnation concept. After all this time, it shouldn't bother anyone...but it does.

Ever heard of a bastard file?
Does that mean it was made using some illegitimate process?

It may be legitimate but so was all of these at one time: chink, ******, pollock, coon, kike and so on.
It wasn't the child's fault he was born out of wedlock (I'm one of those children) so a word like that should not be used this day in age.
