I am planning on taking a road trip with my friends to Toronto some time soon, and I was wondering if they made it mandatory yet to have a passport to drive over the border yet or if they still accept birth certificates. Does anyone know? thanks

The date for requirement for passports for land travel to and from Canada has been delayed until June 2008. See website below and read the top half of the page to confirm this.

I live in Canada, and as far as i am aware you only need a passport if you are flying to or from the US not driving so you should be set for your road trip. Make sure when you are in Toronto to hit up the eaton centre and all the other fine stores Downtown T.O has to offer.
Good Luck and have an awesome time

It is not required to have a passport to enter Canada via land (car, train, bus) until January 2008. It is best to have a passport though. Another word of advice is to make sure you have proof or insurance when driving into Canada, some insurance companies have special insurance cards for people traveling into Canada.

Also, whatever you do, PLEASE do not drive under the influence in Canada. This is a VERY serious offense.

If you are flying in or out of the US, you need a passport now. If you are driving across the border you will need a passport starting January 1st. Due to the passport production problems they have been having, that may be postponed.

Get your passport and you won't have any problems.

I live in Canada and as far as I know you can travel to and from Canada and the US, with just ID and your birth certificate, just when flying do you need a passport.

Your can still travel without a passport, but they provide you the best and easiest way to get across borders. but, a valid picture ID and another form of back up would be okay
