My ex of about 2 yrs contacted me to see how was i doing. The point of him missing me came up and he told me i was a very cool person...to stay "golden". What did he mean by that??

It's a quote from the book "The Outsiders" by SE Hinton. It basically means to just stay exactly how you are because you've got good things going for you. It's a compliment :]

"stay golden" was a saying at the end of the book "The Outsiders" he probably read the book, and it basically meant to stay what you are.
It's also off of the poem by Robert Frost.

I would take it as a compliment. It sounds like he has fond memories of you, you have a special place in his heart, and he wants you to take care of yourself and do well.
