interesting, and yes, you've nailed the issue on the head, the military is being constricted by the media and politics. it all depends on how a confrontation is presented. if the threat reached into every single corner of America, then people would be united. look at 9/11; action against terrorism is unanimously supported. but if china were to, say, invade Taiwan or the Spratleys right now, how united do YOU think we'd be? face it, most of America is sick of foreign wars (in that respect, everyone else is right; when it comes to fighting for the common good first, [Americans] are soft), and would not see the logic in defending quote unquote "gooks half a world away" (no offense intended). even Mohammad (sp?) Ali said "why should i go drop bombs on little brown people half a world away when little brown people right here are treated terribly (not verbatim)" when he refused to serve in Vietnam.
essentially, it would take something big, worldchanging, and widespread change or influence to unite us as we've never been united since WW2.

A really large war? say in the realm of fighting the 4th largest army or greater? We seemed mighty united in whipping the 4th largest army in 100 days, but i guess some people's memories are short. If you're talking large as in nuclear war, then all bets are off, at that point we're talking global suicide...ie, it doesn't matter who wins or loses. A large war, by definition, means either conventional or nuclear weapons will be used and on both counts, we'd come out ahead (ooops, wte of nuclear). It's the small guerrilla actions that get us.

if by "large war" you mean a more traditional "they invade us" scenario, then yes, we can win a war, and with plenty of room to spare so to speak. if the scenario involved a clear aggressor, namely a nation-state, the media and protestors would largely be rendered silent (with the exception of the extreme hard-core protestors and conpiracy nuts).
if Russia or China launched an invasion (despite the overwhlming deterennce our nukes provide), nationalism in the US would overide the anti-war sentiment prevalent today.
just think about it from a common-sense point of view. if we were invaded, what could possibly be the justification for rallying against a what would then be a legitimate war? any politician rallying against it would be ostracized/voted out, and any news outlet doing the same would be marginalized to the point of meaningless-ness

Very good question. I would hope they could but you are so right about the news media. They do their very best to make the military look bad and it has divided our country. They seem to only care about making news and not what it's all about.

YES. We have already won the war in Iraq. Now we are babysitting the fledgling new Iraqi government and trying to keep the different factions from killing each other. We can win any war we decide to win, just have to decide to allow our military to fight as trained, phuque world opinion, and win.

We can win any war. We just have to find the resolve to kill our enemies without feeling guilty about it. Our problem is that we want the world to like us and we wish to give them the same opportunities and freedoms that we enjoy. And want them to have. Too many people just want to destroy us and take what we have worked so hard for. Push come to shove, we will defeat any enemy. We just may take a lot of unneeded casualties to get us to wake up as a nation.

A real War against an aggressor classic army would be entirely winable. The problem comes when when a modern military is used to protect civilians against themselves.
