It may be designed by Mercedes Benz, but is not used in a Mercedes Benz, or it could be used in an older model, that is true with most Daimler products because Mercedes Benz is the mothering company. The funny thing is that in 2006, Chrysler made more sales than Mercedes.

It is a vm diesel motor. Other than that they are all built in detroit(gas motors). And as far as jeeps with diesels in europe...they have been around since the early 90's. They put diesels in every model over there. I am considering importing a complete diesel setup for my cherokee. And it is a 98. I know they had them in cherokees over there in at least 90 if not earlier. So for the people that say "they already have a grand cherokee with a diesel so watch for it over here"... they have had them forever over there. Its just in the us there is not high enough demand for diesel vehicles as so many people dont like the smell of them.

The diesel motor was produced by a company called VM. Diamler does own a portion of the company. So technically, the diesel could be called a 'Mercedes' motor.

the gas 3.7 or new 4.0 are not mercedes engines. the 3.7 came out in 02, derived from the 4.7 that came out in 99. the 4.0 is a bored out version of the 3.5 v6 that came out in 1993 in the LH body cars. (intrepid, concorde, vision, lhs, 300m) the 2.8 4 cyl diesel is no longer available, but will be again in about a year. it is made by viem motori in italy. it is not a mercedes engine either. the 3.0 diesel in the grand cherokee is off the shelf mercedes, and hte NAG1 5 speed auto trans used in many chrysler applications since 05 is off teh shelf mercedes too.
