Why is that whenever I (or some of my peers) have a crush on someone, I (or we) tend to avoid him? Whenever I'm around this person, I do everything I can to get away. I guess I'm scared, but if I like him, then wouldn't it make more sense for me to want to be near him? And if I stop wanting to get away from him does this mean I don't have a crush on this guy anymore?

ohmygosh that is so funny becuase i was thinking the same thing!
there is this guy who i have been friends with for over a year an just started to like him and it is getting harder and harder to talk to him
but if u stop feeling that way it doesnt necessarily mean you dont like him just that you are comfortable around him now

Well by avoiding this person you feel you are lowering the risk of him realizing you like him. My advice to you is to hang around him a little more and see what you think about his personality then maybe if you feel comfortable enough ask him out on a date.

Well it either means that you don't like them or you got over your fear of of embarrassing yourself or you don't care anymore and you have confidence in yourself. When I have a crush I want to talk to them because I'm always messing up and I'm use to it. So just try to get over your fear of doing something wrong.

i think that it means that u r scared that he will find out that u like him, or u feel kind of self-consious about urself wen u are around him. trust me, i used 2 be just like that. i was always terrified that he would find out, and would laugh at me in the face, or worse, behind my back. good luck!
