Professional cameras aren't cheap, and aren't for beginners. You'd have more luck getting a good price on an entry level SLR or DSLR. Build up a supply of good lenses, and eventually you can trade up to a pro camera that uses the same lenses. By then you will have learned enough about photography to be able to use a pro camera.

Try a Nikon D40. Nikon makes excellent lenses!

I don't know what you mean by cheap, but compared to some professional cameras, the Nikon D40 is cheap at around $500 with a lens. It will start you down the road to professional photography in a way that no point and shoot camera could possibly do.

1) Enroll in a photography class.
2) Buy a 35mm film camera with a 50mm lens. That is all you need for now.
3) Learn about light, composition, f-stops, ISO and shutter speed.
4) Practice using light, composition, ISO, shutter speeds and f-stops until you instinctively know them.
5) Practice some more.
6) Find a working professional photographer and become his/her assistant (gofer). Work for free is necessary.
7) Watch and listen. Then listen and watch. Ask questions when he/she isn't working unless you absolutely don't understand his/her instructions.
8) Practice using light, composition, f-stops, shutter speed and ISO some more.
9) Excel in your photography class.
10) You may now think about a really pro grade camera.

what do you mean, "professional" -- if you have in mind something like a hasselblad, forget about cheap.

if you just mean a good 35mm SLR, there are many options, and you should consider buying a used one.

or perhaps you want digital. as a beginner, you don't need top of the line. do some online price-comparison shopping.
sites like www.streetprices.com are helpful, but as with any such site, do a little bit of research on any of the vendors before placing an order.
