I have a 3 year old cat who is not that friendly to other people. She is very sweet to my husband and I but whenver we have visitors, I always warned them to not touch my cat because she might scratch them - just a precaution.

My brother brought an obnoxious guest the other day, I warned him and all that about my cat and he still was very disrespectful despite of what I said...He bothered my "sleeping" cat of course, as reflex, my cat doesn't know him at all she scratched him and made this scary meow noise (that I never heard her meow like tha before!)

make the long story short, a week after this idiot got scratched..he called and asking about my cat's vaccine records - he was saying that his hands is swollen due to the scratch. My problem is, my cat is behind 2 years of vaccine.

I don't want anything bad to happened...BUT IT WAS HIS FAULT! have he not bothered my cat he wouldn't get scratched. I am very upset. Could he get a rabies virus?am I in trouble?

He went to see a doctor, and he said that the doctor was the one asking for my cat's records(which I doubt)we told him that we need a letter of request first before giving any info. I am very upset because he have the audacity to complain meanwhile he bothered my cat!

1. Rabies is not transmitted by scratches but saliva.
When an animal has been healthy for 10 days following bitting someone no risk of transmission of rabies exists because the animal was not infectious at the time of the bite.

The visitor is at no risk of rabies from the cat: a) because he was scratched not bitten and b) the animal is healthy at 10 days.

2. Cat Scratch Fever- Bartonellosis, which is self limiting, or a different bacterial infection or mixed bacterial infection that does require antibiotic treatment is likely the cause of the swollen hand.

Rabies and the records of vaccination do not fit the diagnostic or treatment needs of the situation one way or the other.

The bottom line is the cat is healthy 10 days following the scratch. Nothing further is needed regarding the cat.

The (idiot) has pasturella infection which is an organism that cats carry in their mouths (and it gets on their claws when they wash). Almost all cats carry this. It is easily treated with Augmentum (a potent penicillin). That being said, the cat DOES NOT get vaccinated for this. There is no vaccine for this! And, this is not rabies and he will not get rabies (or you & your husband would have gotten it a long time ago). Your husband has some creepy friends. Another thing is to have the vet clip (not remove) your cat's claws so they are dull & short (or do it yourself with clippers) or they have glue-on plastic covers that go over the claws.

Anyway, if the (jerk) calls again you can tell him what he has & doesn't have.

Make it clear that your cat has always been an indoor cat. If it has, there is no way your cat could give him rabies. He may have some sort of infection, but there is nothing you can do about that now. Next time wash the wound thoroughly. Also keep your cat in another room when guests are there to hopefully avoid this problem. He does sound like a jerk though. I have two cats that stay in my study. When the grandkids are here I have to really watch them in how they touch my cats.

Well at this point it is too late to doctor his hand to make sure he doesn't get some infection. If your cat is an indoor pet he's not going to give anyone rabies. But since you are dealing with a jerk, just hope your brother can convince this guy he does not have rabies. I would tell brother dear to never bring the jerk to your home again! You could be in for some trouble tho if this guy pushes the issue..

If I were you, I would not let out any information about the cat's vaccination record. Tell him that if he's worried about it then he should go to the doctor. If this all turns into a lawsuit or something then you could be digging yourself in deeper by telling him that the cat does not have it's current vaccines. I highly doubt though that he would have rabies. I think that the cat may have had feces under his nail when he scratched the man and that is how it got infected.
