Here's a good article about the history of the name, the inventor and the product:

http://inventors.about.com/od/cstartinventions/a/coca_cola.htm

In May, 1886, Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. John Pemberton concocted the Coca Cola formula in a three legged brass kettle in his backyard. The name was a suggestion given by John Pemberton's bookkeeper Frank Robinson.

Birth of Coca Cola
Being a bookkeeper, Frank Robinson also had excellent penmanship. It was he who first scripted "Coca Cola" into the flowing letters which has become the famous logo of today.
The soft drink was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886.

Until 1905, the soft drink, marketed as a tonic, contained extracts of cocaine as well as the caffeine-rich kola nut.

when the original maker made it, it wasnt intentionally made as a soda, but as a tonic for headaches. it was a thick syrup. it was taken mixed with water and drank as a cure for headaches

he made it from extracts from the kola nut and the coca leaf (cocaine)

then one day, a guy accidentally mixed it with carbonated water and voila, the worlds favorite (and mine too) soda is born.

there for kola nut and coca leaf, flip it around and you get Coca-Cola, tthe then the two main ingredients

When they originally made the soda, they were putting cocaine in it which is what made it addicting, thus making people continually buy it and generating a bigger profit for the company. This was eventually outlawed because they realized that cocaine wasnt healthy.
