I don't see how it could be. Back when my father was a boy, it was used for a laxative and just about anything that made you sick, apparently.

There is a Castor plant which is poisonous.

Castor oil is not poisonous but it is a very strong Laxative, so must not be use it also has strong odour(gamti ardiu), the refined one is not that much mild but it has no smell and it is easy to gulp down. It is in use and known as paraffin.

Medical theories change from time to time, lots of thing that were use few years ago are out of favour with doctors to-day and you are correct, doctors do not recommend castor or Parafine oil any more.

It is an irritant type laxative and should be avoided. Epsom salts and others of this type draw water into the intestine and can be fatal. Laxatives with a fiber base are safe. Avoid those that contain flax seed hulls (Metamucil) as they cause gas. Citrusel is better because it doesn't.

The ricin that is found in castor beans is not a mild poison. It has been used in murders and assassinations. I think it was a favorite of the KGB.

Castor oil is not poisonous, but is laxative. So the quantity ingested is important. I suppose that may be why the odor as well as the taste are so unpleasant - a natural safeguard. Remember the expression "castoroil face...?"
