i just heard that god told abraham to kill his son to test his loyalty?
WHAT THE HELL?
he told a person to kill his own flesh and blood to prove his loyalty
even if he was kidding, that is a sick way to prove your loyalty
how would you feel if you had to do that? how would your child feel before you killed him?

God was also testing Abraham's obedience and even more so, his faith. Abraham trusted God to come through. I think we all face things in life that will be a test of faith, trust and obedience. But God gives us that faith, the grace to get through it.

Why are you questioning only Christians about this Old Testament story, and why are you just learning about this now?
Anyway, at the time the story took place, animal sacrifice was the norm among the Hebrews, and human sacrifice was not unheard of in other civilizations . God, if you believe in his existence, told Abraham to prepare an offering to him of his only child to see if Abraham would obey him against his own desire to protect his son. It was a cruel test, but they were cruel times.
The Bible also speaks of stoning people to death for sins that wouldn't even make us blink an eye today. The Bible is an excellent historical reference told from the viewpoint of the people in it. If, OTOH, you believe the Bible is the true word of God, you better be prepared to accept it all as written. Picking and choosing which parts of the Bible you want to believe is hypocritical.

I tried to look that one up and found this instead:
Jephthah DID kill his daughter and sacrifice her to the god of Abraham, as a burnt offering no less!
Judges 11:30-39
ADD: There is a heck of a big difference between taking a child that cheers and dances at your return from war and making her into a burnt offering, and a doctor removing a lump of flesh that is not even a child.
According to the Bible children do not even have enough soul to come back at Judgment day (despite the post Bible dogma that tries to say otherwise).

hey Chad did you ever think about this, maybe it was kind of a foretelling of what God was going to do for us, because he did sacrifice his own son for us. God will not test everyone in the same way ,but be certain God was teaching Abraham something through that otherwise he would not have tested him that way. Peace

It was more than that.
It has to do with Committing to a Contract, Spiritually.
Because Abraham Committed to killing his son, this opened up a Spiritual Contract for GOD to Send HIS Son to be Sacrificed.
No, I do not UnderStand it all at this Time, just that Human Beings have 100 Percent Authority over the Earth at this Time.
And, GOD was Legally Kicked Out of this Earth.
So, GOD has to use Our Authority (that HE gave us) over this Earth to be able to Do What HE wants to do, in the Earth, to help us.
Basically, if you draw out a Legal Contract for your Friend to have 100 Percent Authority over your Car that YOU OWN, and he,she signs it, THEN YOU have to Ask he,she if YOU can drive, wash, so on YOUR OWN CAR untill that Contract Runs Out.
See?
Hope this Helps.

You just heard this in an answer. Which means you're taking it out of context. If you were to get a cd on that sermon series, it would explain the meaning of it. It's dramatic, yes! But so is Christ dying on the cross. I can't answer or explain it. And you admited that you have no intrest in learning about it. This isn't something that can be answered in a few sentences to someone who really doesn't care anyway.

Uh, uninformed moron, the the story of Abraham and Isaac is in the Old Testament, the Jewish Bible, the Christians simply decided to steal it and add it to the New Testament to support their contention that Jesus was the Messiah. So, try looking at Rabinical writings, not Sunday school stories.

So you're saying you don't like this idea and think it's cruel, is that right?
No one was killed. He stopped Abrahams hand before he could plunge the knife into his son. God provided a ram stuck in a thicket.
Sounds like a pretty good test to me.

What he says:
"To better understand the story we must examine the context. God had repeatedly promised Abraham that his seed would father whole nations in the land of Canaan, and nothing meant more to Abraham than this promise. Sarah, his wife, was getting extremely old and had not yet produced a son. She was becoming barren, he was becoming impatient, and after God forgave Abraham for fathering a child with one of his concubine’s, Sarah finally gave birth to Isaac. For such an old lady to give birth to Isaac, the child promised by God, it was the miracle of Abraham’s life. Now that God’s promise was fulfilled, Abraham finally felt complete.
God desired to test Abraham’s commitment to God, however, and instructed him to slay Isaac as a sacrifice. The story told in Genesis 22 explicitly mentions how Abraham loves Isaac. All fathers love their children, but Isaac was not only Abraham’s child, he was the miracle child that fulfilled God’s promise. This test wasn’t so much about whether Abraham was willing to kill his son for God (Killing people out of instruction from God was quite common in those times). Rather, it was about whether Abraham would be willing to annul the fulfilled promise that he had waited many years for. Due to numerous reasons Isaac was the most important thing in Abraham’s life, and Abraham had waited most of his life for the promised child. When God asked Isaac back, it was not designed to test Abraham’s willingness to commit an evil to satisfy God, but rather whether he was willing to sacrifice the one thing that meant most to him, the child that God only just gave to him.
For Abraham it would have been quite absurd, God gave the child after many years, and shortly after he wants him back. Since God never used to overturn his own commands, I am sure Abraham was certain that Isaac was going to die, and God’s promise was going to remain unfulfilled to Abraham’s death. Nevertheless, he had an absurd hope, faith, that God would not do this. As Abraham climbed the mountain each step produced a greater conviction that God was not joking. The fact that Abraham had raised the knife, was about to cut the boy’s throat, before the angel stopped him is testament to how resigned Abraham was to the fact that he had to sacrifice everything for God, and yet held faith that the absurd and impossible would occur and Isaac will be saved."
EVERYTHING in context.

It would take forever, for you to understand..but I will try...Abraham had a son,Issac, God I believe wanted to show Abraham what God was going to go through with His own son Jesus Christ,,You know how hard it must have been to God to give His son for all of our sins,,knowing we are screw ups,,Jesus didn't sin,He was without sin..but He died willing for our sins,,what a scarfice He made for us..God wanted Abraham to see the pain He would have to endure,,Abraham would be the father of many nations...
