I'm a step-parent, and yes, I weirded my stepson out. He was cossetted and adored by his grandparents and great-grandparents. His Dad had to work 500 miles away and drove all that way to be with him every weekend. I had 2 children and he was right in the middle. He had a very difficult time adjusting to being the middle child after being cosseted by so many adults. He still holds a grudge against his Dad, and we've been married for 19 years. I tried so hard to bring him into our family. But we couldn't afford to get high-end shoes and clothes like his grandparents and great-grandparents could, so he decided they were better. I guess they were. But we wanted him with us. He (and they) decided they were better. My sons have turned out to be wonderful men. My other son is married with 3 children, one on the way and we are delighted. But he and his wife can't even do laundry, clean up their house, do dishes or cook for their family. Everyone else can.

Steps are different. Your mom and dad are trying harder to maintain their relationships and you get to watch. Steps do things differently and it seems at times to be over the top with their handling of situations. I personally saw alot of them come and go during my mother's and father fight to find the right somebody. lol I ended up having 6 or 8 grandmothers. Which can be very confusing but very worthwhile at christmas, birthdays and holidays. Give them a chance but remember mom and daddy really do love you. Nobody fits perfectly together. Good luck.

Only when they don't truly accept their step-children, and play favorites with their own children.
