It does depend on the distance, but mostly walking and the bicycle are only cheaper if you can reach your destination in one day.
Overnight costs will raise the price a lot for longer distances.
Hitch hiking is the cheapest option for longer distances, but in most places not really safe, and as it is rather unpredictable, and you might get stuck overnight in a town with just one very expensive hotel, might work out more expensive than you thought.
Bus is the next one up, local as well as long distance, as well as packet holidays.
If you travel every now and again, the train is the next, as you do not have to pay for it when you do not use it.
Car is cheaper than train if you travel a lot (or have it standing on the curb anyhow,) as the cost of buying, servicing and tax or rent should be counted as part of the price per travel, on top of the price of petrol and toll or motorway/congestion fees. If you do not make a lot of use of your car a taxi will be cheaper.
But while mostly more expensive per travel, flying can work out cheaper per mile/km than any of the others, as you normally do long distances when flying. (But remember to add the travel to and from the airport into the price.)

Be an armchair traveller and go on a "Staycation" (it's a "Corner Gas" episode).
You can go anywhere at all, and have the most wonderful time! You are only limited by your imagination!
Otherwise, take a bus!

at expedia you can be notified when there is a price for a flight in your range of money offers. if you are staying in the country trains are uncomfortable but cheap. and driving is also cheap.
