I heard something about that on the news and I was shocked. I couldn't understand why someone would want a marriage to automatically end after 7 years. Its like "ok, so I will marry this person, and in 7 years I will marry this other person!" Marriage is to be entered into with love and commitment to each other for the rest of your lives, not until your contract runs out. I could just see the new pick up line "my marriage runs out in 2 years...how about yours?"

This something that was proposed in Germany I do believe. It's not that it will "run out" just that the marriage license has to be renewed after 7 years just like any other license. I'm not saying it's a great idea, just not a completely random one. The couple will have to reaffirm their commitment to each other every 7 years, it will give them an opportunity to re-evaluate their lives and communicate and not take each other for granted. Divorce will be easy, just wait until the time runs out and do nothing, no court dates or lawyers except division of property etc.
The flip side is, it is so easy to get a divorce that if things aren't perfect people might just give up too easy. The commitment of marriage isn't as genuine if there is a built in "out" so I'm not sure what the long term affects on society would be.
It definitely makes you re-think the logic of the marriage system that is currently in place. Why was it set up the way it is? Is this the best way to run it? What are other ways of coupling that can be explored? Interesting stuff.

I almost think this is a joke.
And then I think about the other terrible things that are going on in today's society, and to be completely honest-- I'm almost not surprised. (Key word is still 'almost')
50% of American marriages end in divorce... if you have a set time from now, just imagine. I'm trying to think of a rational reason why someone would want a marriage for seven years, and I have none. Whatever your reasoning is, wait. There's someone out there who will love you forever (even if your first 'real' marriage were to end in divorce). But why stick it out with a guy when you PLAN to have it end?
Think about it, please. This is very serious.

Your proposal is just like the one I heard on the news that was causing a reckus. Quite frankly, it's a ridiculous idea. Marriages are not like licenses that we should renew every so often.

This is not a new idea. Read Patricia Keneally Morrison's books and you will see. There have been societies that have different marriage times available. It depends on why you are getting married. It works well if you're marrying to please your family. You marry for a year and a day and then you go your separate ways, parents satisfied.

That's absolutely terrible!
You're setting a time for divorce... that's unbelievable!
Personally, I don't want to ever get a divorce. I want to find a wife and be with her forever, even in the afterlife. And for you to be already setting a time for divorce... that's just disgusting.
You need to re-think your plans and realize what a stupid and unethical idea you have.

What? That is ridiculous. Marriages don't expire - they are FOR LIFE!! If you don't want to be married FOR LIFE, then don't get married at all! That is a rubbish idea.
