As several of the answers to this question demonstrate, many of the Catholics' most adamant critics demonstrate little understanding of either Catholicism or scripture. In fact, Catholicism is full Gospel Christianity.
Protestants think Catholics don't follow the scriptures because they misunderstand important teachings in the New Testament. The reason Protestants fail to understand the scriptures is the straitjacket of sola scriptura, which does not permit them to read all the supporting documents of the early church, especially the writings of the Fathers of the Church.
An honest Bible reader will admit that some scriptures are cryptic. For example, what does it mean to be "born again of water and the Spirit"? These are the kinds of questions the disciples asked Jesus, and to get the answer, we have to ask the disciples of the disciples.
On "born again," we learn from Tertullian in 203 AD: "No one can attain salvation without baptism, especially in view of the declaration of the Lord, who says, ‘Unless a man shall be born of water, he shall not have life’" (Baptism 12:1).
No scholar would try to read any other 2000-year-old writings out of context. Yet Protestants imagine that any naive reader can discover the meaning of the New Testament writings out of the blue, without the aid of the Church Jesus established.
Early catholic writers (St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, St. John, St. Paul, St. Peter, and their disciples) wrote the New Testament, and the original catholic Church selected the writings that Protestants misinterpret to attack the Church.
Wouldn't it be useful for Protestants to read the Bible in the context of all the other early Christian writings rather than imagining that they can interpret ancient texts in a vacuum?
Cheers,
Bruce

just go to mass and see the scriptures unfolded in each mass celebrated then try tell us that we catholics do not know or read the scriptures, we are the only reason the scriptures are available today. infact we are the only ones who use all of scripture guided and protected by the holy spirit as promised by jesus christ himself

for that Earl D, the reason why priests don't marry is because they are supposed to represent Christ. and since Christ didn't marry, the priests don't marry too. I hope you get that. and that's also one of the reasons why there can never be a female Catholic priest.
by the way, tebone, to answer your question concerning the Bible-fundamentalists: the reason why they say that Catholics don't follow the Bible is because their version of the Bible is incomplete and partial. also Bible-fundies' way of understanding the Bible is questionable as well.

I think the system is different. Things like mass and so forth. And I don't know if it's still being argued, but the bread and wine thing was an issue too.

I do not say that. Catholics are great people whose devotion is admirable, I just do not agree with many of the institutions of the Catholic Church. It does not make me loath them, it just does not make me identify as a Catholic.

Jesus said ALL men should marry
NO exceptions
How that's for starters
Catholic Preists USED to be allowed to be married until some POPE over rode Jesus.

well, they abuse the scripture. the bible doesnt say to pay indulgences, so there is no need to. also, i think the pope announced a couple months ago that there is no purgatory. how does he know? who even made up purgatory? its not in the bible! also, jesus is the head of the church, not the pope.
