Cat collars should be designed to break away at the clip or have an elastic part that lets cats get out of them. Dog collars shouldn't have those features or you will be walking your dog and he pops out of his collar.

All cat collars should be the break-away kind in case they get stuck.
They will either have an elastic part of the collar that lets it stretch if they get snagged, or the clasp is designed to pop opened if need be.
Dog collars are not designed to do that.
You will find it hard to walk the dog if the collar is for cats. It will pop off at the tension and make it very unsafe for the dog. You will also find that the dog scratching it's neck will cause it to come off.

I don't see much of a difference. My 6 pound chihuahua wears a little kitty collar with a bell on it. It suits him just fine. I am sure that I will get the thumbs down for this but I would NEVER use one of those awful break-away collars for my cat. They are called "break-away" collars for a reason. The cat can easily break them apart and ditch them if he wants to. I have my cat's tags and ID on his collar, so I don't want to take a chance on him losing them. My cat and my smallest chihuahua wear the exact same kind of collars. I agree with hankslow who said that the price is the only real difference.

usually cat collars have a break away part in them due to kitties love of small spaces , so if the collar gets stuck on something it will break instead of choke them .
