I n my viewpoint chemistry should be right at the top of your list . Chemistry is the foundation point of any medical course of study . If you have a solid knowledge of Chemistry and make is a part of your constant storehouse of daily study , you will be at the top of your medical course - whatever the path you take in medicine . It just gives you so much clearer a picture of the human function of life . I don't believe there is any medical course that does not rely heavily on Bio- Chemistry . Try to make it your favorite subject and see the world open up you like it did for me ...especially in cancer research .... good luck and God bless you to excel.

My suggestion would be pre-medicine. Any good college should offer a pre-medicine major which is essentially a cross section of both chemistry and biology. [If you major in chemistry, they may offer an ACS (Americal Chemical Society) tract and a pre-med chemistry tract. Biology departments also usually offer either pre-medicine or straight biology tracts as well. In either department, the pre-med major would be best.] The pre-medicine curriculum is usually designed to focus on the courses you need to do well on the MCAT.

On the outside chance that you change your mind about medical school (or don't get in), the BS Premed degree will get you a job in research in lots of different areas.

Good luck in your studies.

You can write the director of the pre-med program at the colleges you are considering, asking what the acceptance rate of graduates is.

Do you have access to recent medical graduates, such as residents or interns? You could ask their opinion about classmates who graduated from various pre-med programs.

Personally, I think if you get very good grades at a respected college, you have an excellent chance of getting into medical school.

Medicine is a really reall long hard road, filled with tons of science courses. if you love science, and have no problem having very little social life compared to others your age then I would consider it. however if you just like kids, or like the social aspect then there are many many jobs where you could be fulfilled and still be home by 5 pm, not to mention sleep in till 6am. you either have to love the science, the power, or the prestege. but major in bio or biochem, and take the full chem spectrum of classes. and pepper it with Kine and anatomy and physiology as you can . basically take everthing you can handle. but balance on the line DO not burn yourslelf out you have at least 8 years at that pace. but judging from your comment of "i wouldn't mind" you may be happier teaching kids, or nursing, or doing a PA program. maybe sports therapy, there are many other options where you cans still deal with kids, medicine is not for everyone. there are lots of closet grumpy docs out there, claiming to love their jobs becasue they have to, do what you love, dont do something becasue you can. get a job in a hospital and really listen to the residence, and med students, its not like grays Anatomy. many of them have a attitude of a marathon runner, they hurt, it sucks but they just want to be able to say they did it. but you need a real solid reason to go or you will not make it. "I could handle being a peds" is not enough. investigate the position and see if it is really what you want before spending the next 8 years doing nothing but aquiring it. and definallty do not do it for the money. if you spent that kind of time and devotion in the busness field you would make 3 times what a doctor makes. (they still make good money, just not realative to positions with the same amount of training and expertise) I know many who make 300,000+ a year. but they have 10 years of school and work 70 hrs a week.

Well, I know that Biology is a popular major at UCSB. I hear it's a great university to get hands-on experience in researching and experimenting in science. Check it out for yourself.
