She hisses and growls at him. I was told by my vet that she was lonely and needed another cat because I work all day. Now I'm not sure if I made the right choice. I do love the new cat and am not to favor one or the other more. Please give me some advice. It's only been 2 days.
Yes, they both are fixed and the new cat is in another room. I really hope this works out.

I had the same problem 2 months ago. After keeping them apart for a few days, letting them only to smell each other's smell on my hands, their stuff, etc, I let them see each other for a few days, without letting them fight. Gradually I started feeding them together and let them hiss and fight a bit, it is important so that they establish a hierarchy, but I supervised them and made sure there would be no injuries. Soon I kept them apart only when i was not there. Now they are best buddies, they sleep together, lick each other, they hug all the time, play etc. It took at least one month.

If they are not neutered, get both of them neutered now. They are so much more comfortable and will enjoy one another's company without all that "chemistry" causing tension.

Cats are creatures of habit, and any change in their daily routine makes them unhappy, for awhile.

Let them work it out between themselves. Like kids in school, there is an adjustment period. Buy similar toys for both cats, and present them at the same time.

One day, when you come home from work you just might find them curled up together, taking a nap.

No problem. The fact that the new cat is young and of the opposite sex will ensure they will get used to each other and, after a bit, the older female will likely become quite affectionate with the male.

Give it time. They'll come around and be just fine. It could take up to two months, but it will happen. Patience is key.
